what physics games there are on the Atari?

Postby nativ » Fri Apr 27, 2012 6:02 pm

I wonder what other physics games there are on the Atari? Might make a good thread? Bid :)

I know this is ST Games..

first game I thought of was H2O on the Falcon which features water.

All games feature some kind of physics engine. Some more accurate than others.

Interesting game, not played it yet a combination of SpaceWar+Asteroids Gravity / Venn Colour theory and particles! ~ Arcade

Virus 3D Gravity / Propulsion with spawning environment ~ Arcade

Really liked this on the Spectrum and the ST too. Due to the perspective it hides a lot of the game from immediate view, very simple concept with a progressive undertone, 'proper oldschool' 8)

It could be argued that Obsession is a physics game, along with other pinball games. Obsession has the best pinball physics I've seen on ST however.

Puzznic employs gravity.

Bombuzal has explosions, ice tiles and disintegrating tiles.

Wicked.. Is a bit weird and probably has nothing to do with physics, but you should play it anyway because it's ace! ;)

The entire Esprit/Oxyd series uses physics excessively, from the speed of the marble being essential to not sink into mud (or even water) and to push stones e.g. in Sokoban-style levels to the limited control on ice and no control "in space" and the rubber band and gravity effects in some other levels.

Reading the thread title, Exile came to mind. Seems to have gravity, weight, inertia. Is it really physics though? Or just clever coding?

All physics games are just clever coding :) Exile would be my perfect example of a 16 bit physics game.

Snooker game... Jimmy White's 'Whirlwind' Snooker.
Suppose to be accurate (at that time) and serious simulation of the sport.

I remember "Downfall". It's a nice two player game where you've got to direct falling snow into the right direction to beat your opponent.

What about Atomix? It doesn't feature any game physics but is about physics.

Well, it's chemistry really.

And Joust deserves a mention. The feeling of inertia is great, especially when combined with the wing flap mechanics.

I guess Elite is pretty physics-heavy too - matching your spin to that of the space station when docking, and hyperspace, etc.

BTW - STickhead - You making any new YouTube vids? I just found your channel.. Nice to hear other people's retro computer stories. :)

And hell difficult for me... the docking computer is always the first few must buy for me !!
