thanks for the info, i did not know that :)

Here is a video of Metropolis (by Paradox) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkActFueouA
Metropolis (and most other Paradox game i guess) don't have an option for turning of the YM2149 music and only get sound effects together with the MIDI music :?
So i had both YM2149 and MIDI music mixed.
Thats the reason i like to use Yamaha's MU-modules as they allow the sound to be mixed from another source very well using the A/D input of the module.

Although having YM sound effects with MIDI music would be the best option if the game supports it, Albedo is a good example (and so is ST Karate).

Now i have bought an Casio CZ-101... and also recorded the music from Sapiens and Albedo as those two games have specific support for the Casio CZ-101.

Image

Both Sapiens and Albedo has fairly weak arrangement imho for the Casio support but i guess it was difficult for Gilles Soulet to explore all the capabilites of the CZ-101 as it do have some big limitations when it cames to multi-timbral midi, Gilles only used the preset sounds of the Casio for the musics (that means only 16 sounds to choose from) and they are 3-part multi-timbral even if the Casio support 4-part.

I have also recorded the digital ingame music and did some tries with the generic midi options aswell... download and check them out yourself :)

And as a bonus here is the Sapiens music from the Win95 version :)

Updating the list and also trying to specify wich type of midi device that is supported by the game.

Ultima 3 - ?
-------
Ultima 4 - ?
-------
Arkanoid - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
ECO - ?
-------
Pirates - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
Police Quest 2 - Roland MT-32, Casio CZ-101
-------
Conquest of Camelot - Roland MT-32, Casio CZ-101
-------
Larry 3 - Roland MT-32
-------
Kings quest 4 - Roland MT-32
-------
Hero's Quest - Roland MT-32, Casio CZ-101
-------
Albedo - Casio CZ-101, Generic mono-timbral MIDI device, Generic 3-part multi-timbral MIDI device
-------
Sapiens - Casio CZ-101, Generic mono-timbral MIDI device, Generic 3-part multi-timbral MIDI device
-------
Lost Dutchman Mine - Casio CZ-101
-------
Karate Kid part 2 - Casio CZ-101
-------
Bomb Jack - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
Metropolis - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
ST Karate - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
ST Protector - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
Space Station - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
War Zone - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
Fire Blaster - Generic mono-timbral MIDI device
-------
Chopper X - ?
-------
Veteran - ?

Special notice about Karate Kid Part 2, this is what the manual say about the MIDI support:
The soundtrack is designed to be played through a Casio CZ101 (or compatible) keyboard as well as the T.V or Monitor loudspeaker. For other Keyboards, set channels 1-4 to vibraphone, synth strings, bass and brass--- or similar intruments.

And the Casio support in the Sierra On-line games are fake even if the box mention special support for Casio so is the Casio driver just for "Generic 4-part multi-timbral MIDI device", but i added CZ-101 in this list for the Sierra games just because the actual gamebox has that info.

Police Quest 2 and Conquest of Camelot does not even have the Casio driver with the game... here is what the "readme" from Conquest of Camelot says:
The CZ101 and the Casio MT540 sound
driver is no longer "officially"
supported by Sierra On-Line due to the
enormous amount of time required to
fully test and verify each new driver.
We will, however, make the driver
available on The Sierra BBS so that
you may download and use the driver
at your own risk. A minimal amount of
testing will be done on the driver
periodically.

The Sierra BBS number is:
(209) 683-4463
No Parity
8 data bits
1 stop bit

Stupid to claim CZ-101 support on the box but not having the actual sound driver coming with the game :?
(and then it turns out it is just a generic MIDI driver)

I have been considering buying some kind of MIDI keyboard for my ST but what does all this mean?
Will any MIDI keyboard be able to play the music from games listed as Generic mono-timbral MIDI device?
Those games that have an specific device listed won't play music on other devices?

No, it's just because there was no GENERAL MIDI standard that's all the 'drivers are about really enabling patch selection, etc.

Any MIDI keyboard will receive and understand what is being sent, in some cases you might have to manually select the patches like channel 1 vibes 2 string 3 bass, etc.

Hope that helps, if you like a suggestion for a keyboard or two you can use sonicstate.com for a reference

cheers

I think many of the Roland CM range sound modules have a compatibility mode for the old MT-32.

They are on Ebay all the time: Item number: 270842926909

It does indeed sound lovely and would have blown my mind back in the day! Maybe you could record the output from the MT-32 and upload the flac or mp3 files to the webpage http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st-conquests-of-camelot_8979.html.

Nice. If you don't mind my being nosey, what are those going for these days?

I'm beginning to think my home ST setup desperately needs one. :)

If you are thinking of getting a sound module, it doesn't have to be one of the older ones ( Pre General MIDI )
you could get a very capable Yamaha MU ( GM /XG )Series or Possibly even the Roland SC88 Pro!( GM / GS )

Or even use your PCee sound card as a sound module by rigging up the Atari to it! :)

I was checking at Atari Mania what games they list having MIDI support.

Ammotrack - claims on the title screen to have MIDI support, but i can't get it to work? Is it for two player link setup maybe?

Mayday Squad - strange... only a short part of the music is sent to MIDI... i suspect it is some leftover midi code that was ment to be removed but a part is still there :)

Dream Zone - This one seems to have MIDI support for a special MIDI device as it seems to send sysex... but what device is it for? Does anybody have the manual to check it out?

16-32 Diffusion games - I could not find any download of their games, can anyone with access to these games check if it is generic MIDI support or for a special device?

While I don't have any answers about those games I just want to thank you Stefan (and the other posters in this thread) for your work here! I have an MT-32 that I rescued from a guitar shop's garbage a few years ago. I don't find it to be much of a joy to work with in the studio but it is quite awesome to hear tunes composed with it in mind. The MT-32 and the Roland LAPC card for PC blew me away back in the day but I never had either.

Yes, some mean MIDI-music, others two-player link option.

Here are (Linux) instructions how to setup software midi synthesis up for the Hatari emulator:
http://hg.tuxfamily.org/mercurialroot/h ... -linux.txt

It works fine with Atari MIDI applications and games. The one's I've tested personally are Sequencer One (for midi composing), Larry 2 (music output) and Midimaze (networking).

Here's an example of setting up several Hatari instances connected with midi:
http://hg.tuxfamily.org/mercurialroot/h ... di-ring.sh

E.g. recording midi music with Cubase from a game doesn't need any extra HW, just the Atari SW and running couple of Hatari instance in Linux.

I updated the earlier post i did wich listed what MIDI devices the games supported... i added "Generic mono-timbral MIDI device" info for Pirates.

This is what the manual says about ST MIDI support:

The Atari ST version of Pirates! supports music output via the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), so taht the music may be played on an external sythesizer equipped with this standard interface. To allow the greatest number of users to enjoy this feature, we have kept the MIDI output as generic enough to work with all synthesizers. Any brand of MIDI should work with Pirates!.
The music featured in Pirates! is Baroque, and we think it's best played with a harpsichord or clavichord-type of sound, but feel free to use any voice that pleases you. Experimentation is half the fun! Beware of voices with extreme key range scaling (i.e.. ones that get softer as pitch goes up) as some of the notes seem to disappear.
The music MIDI output is 3-note polyphonic sent on channel one. Only one note on/note off information is sent. Sound effects, such as sword clanks and cannonball splashes are not sent via MIDI, since most synthesizers do not have these sounds available. Only music is sent via MIDI. The sound effects ar eproduced on the ST itself even when MIDI is being used for the music.

Actually so was the ST version first with MIDI music of all versions of Pirates! the PC version did not get MIDI support until 1993 although it got proper music made for MT-32 and not generic as the ST version.
