Platform games

Postby belboz » Mon Dec 01, 2003 8:25 pm

Guys,

I had gotten such good feedback on the party games I thought I would ask about good platform games.

I know about the Great Gianna Sisters. I downloaded a Stario Christmas title from here (couldn't find the original Stario).

Any other good platform games? These are a favorite of my daughter.

Defintitly agree with the above.... But if you're looking for a retro feel to your platform-game antics, then who could not include Jet Set Willy ??? The direct port of teh speccy code to the ST makes it superb :)

Since you mentioned Rainbow Islands (superb!), how come Bubble Bobble is not in the list? :D Also, Midnight Resistance, ahhh...

Beyond the Ice Palace and Black Lamp are worth a look.

Yeah, Beyond the Ice Palace ... That's a classic ...

You can find in depth reviews and loads of screenshots on a lot of the games mentioned over at the Graveyard!

Some platform games not yet mentioned, that should appeal to the younger game player:
New Zealand Story
Nine Lives
Escape From The Planet Of The Robot Monsters (a classic!)
Parasol Stars (Rainbow Islands 2?)

These aren't necessarily good, but a list of platform games. I'm sure there are many more :)

Prince of Persia (good apparently)
Robocop 1 and 2 (1 was slow, 2 was pretty good, playable anyway)
Killling Game Show (excellent)
Quik and Silva (really hard without the cheats, but colourful and playable enough)
Kid Gloves (didn't appeal to me...)
Switchblade I and II (I think it was switchblade II I played. Was good)
Chuck Rock (good)
Blues Brothers
Bombjack
CJ Elephant (I didn't really like it, but played it a lot for some reason)
Rodland (I think someone mentioned this already, but it's worth a second mention :-)
Ghouls'n'Ghosts (Playable enough...)
Strider 1 and 2 (Both ok. 2 was better than 1)
Wolfchild (I really liked this)
Metal Mutant (Not a platform game in every sense)
Blacklamp (mentioned already, but wortha second :) )
Barbarian 1 and 2
There were some Simpsons games... ""Bart vs Space mutants"? they were ok, not fantastic though.
Rock'n'Roll clams is kind of a platform game...
Ed The Duck (good cutesy game for kids. I play it too!)
The Dizzy games
Enchanted Lands... is that the name? It was by the same people who did Wings of Death, technically very good, sync scrolling etc
Attack of the Mutant Camels .... platform game? Good game anyway
Oleander (or something like that?)

I can think of other games I've played, but no names come to mind :) One game was quite good, it was kind of like Beyond the Ice Palace, but with bigger sprites, and platforms that would sink into flames unless you jumped off them onto the next. There were three games in the series, in another you flew around as an eagle

Gods is the number one platform game for the Atari ST. It had won a few European Gold Awards and has earned recognition as being one of the best Platform Games of all time. Actually, the Super Nintendo version of Gods is the best version of the game. It is even better then the Amiga version.

My favorite platformers:
Gods
New Zealand Story (if you can get a version that works past 1-4).
Magic Pockets
Rainbow Islands

If you want to be playing with a group of people, Rainbow Islands is probably the best, and then New Zealand Story.

The other two have a more single player feel about them (in my opinion).

Droid was a PD game, but is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. I would definitely rank it above any other ST platformer that I've played.

What's funny about seeing this thread though...I just received an email from the author of Droid thanking me for my comments on the game that I left on LGD. He apparently made Droid II but never released it, and is offering me a copy. I'm definitely most interested in seeing what it's like!

Here's a good platformer that hasnt been mentioned yet

Mouse Trap
made by Microdeal it's very similar to Manic Miner but more stages and better graphics!

Still not as goos as Manic Miner but who cares? Its fun in It's essence

Also I dont know if this would be classed as a platformer or not
but Chronicles of Omega is ok as well (If you can finish the first stage) :P

Almost forgot about Onslaught the RPG cross Platform game that rocks!
