while we are all thinking about what we want, have a look at http://www.worldofspectrum.org/
And at their "FAQ" http://www.worldofspectrum.org/WoSFAQ.html

And http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/faq.php

And http://www.worldofspectrum.org/faq/ (see the text at the bottom of http://www.worldofspectrum.org/WoSFAQ.html#5H )

And http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/ZX_Spe ... nformation (not been going long by the looks of it...)

Some retro sites are, well, much less useful.

It would be nice if we could really sort out a good main / central site for the Atari.
Falcon, Atari 520ST, 520STFM, 1040STE, Mega, TT and more PC's than I care to count and an assortment of 8 bit micros (nearly forgot the Psion's).
Visit the Atari-Forum Wiki. Lots of technical info at DrCoolZic Atari ST Site :D

probably not !.... only 4 pages of posting as of now... we need to hit 100

Seriously, I think it clearly identified what needs to be done on the wiki and the need to lead people to the wiki.

Yes, these are classical FAQ.
IIRC, there are ones for Atari ST as well.

Edit:
I tried to look for the FAQ from comp.sys.atari.st (c.s.a.s) which was the Usenet frequent place of yesteryears Atarian (still some use it under google groups) but it is bad as i only found this http://www.uni-giessen.de/faq/archiv/cs ... 00000.html which is unreadable to me.
May I dig some more.
Any way I realised the Atari FAQ link posted previously also made reference to c.s.a.s faq

Excellent.... yes that ought to be done. Put back that Link to the Wiki like before. :megaphone:
Also may I suggest that the "FAQ" there be changed to "Forum help" or just "help", as that's what it is - help on using the forum.

Dal wrote:Not really. By using the wiki platform the way it was intended, any registered user may edit any article. If I create an article that isn't technically correct, you may edit it. That is the point of it. As Wong rightly states, trying to maintain an FAQ in a forum thread will lead to mammoth threads that may never be maintained - there is a reliance on the OP or an admin to constantly clean up and update information based on his own interpretation (which may not be correct).
It seems daft to have the wiki application installed and not exploit it for something it is clearly designed to handle.
I think all our efforts are best placed in giving the wiki a good old kick up the rectum and making it more accessible.
It's clear we need an FAQ.
@SofiST: please create a post with a vote on whether the FAQ should be forum based or Wiki based and we'll see what other members decide.

I think that nobody can be sure what will serve best. Best is to try, and then judge. We can open here new poll, discussions, but nothing can replace real life experience :D .

Best is to have both FAQ: Wiki and forum based. And forum based may help us to make better Wiki too.
It is never good that some fears decide our steps. Avoiding large post count in FAQ may be solved pretty easy:
1 : Putting there notice that it is special forum section, and that most of posts will be deleted - in purpose of easier usage, and according to it's name. Posting should serve as feedback mainly. Nobody can write complete and error-less FAQ from first, so feedback will serve as reminder, corrector. Writer of FAQ article should inform moderators when updated it, and what posts to delete.
2 : Restricting posting there - via moderator approval .

After some months FAQ should be pretty much complete, and may serve as base for Wiki variant.

FAQ means exactly what means - frequently asked questions according to forum's orientation. Forum help will mislead - people will think that it is for forum usage, behaviour. And usually there is something like 'forum rules', help, usage for that :D Hmm - here I don't see such thing.
Probably would be good to compose something like that: warn people on some basic things as using search, don't post unproven things, watch your language :D etc.

All I remember when I followed the "FAQ" url previously was something pertaining to the usage of the forum.
IIRC, it did include some text on behaviour allowed etc
So may be rules will work better.
Did it contain any how-to in there ? I can't remember.

God this thread is getting tedious and long! Bu I suppose that is why management by committee never works lol

Any FAQ will do, and will be better tham a 404 Page not found error. I personally like the examples from World of Spectrum... Although quite why anyone would want to live in that world, I dont't know. Atari is clearly superior... Anyways, the WOS Faq is good, as is the infos on the ST Quick un.

However, I do now think that the forum would be best with a WOS type FAQ, that answers "Frequent Questions", and perhaps does link to the wiki for info.

However, if we are going to link to the wiki, I must warn you, that its is no where near as useful as the ST Quick Faq. And I am being polite here so as not to offend people, but I personally would not use the wiki in its present state, and I recommended bringing in the ST Quick Faq as a basis, or very similar, and update what would be a then high level of issue coverage and content with modern links. Bish bash bosh! Its'a done! 8)

Just to explain in more detail. The ST Quick Faq is then Wiki-ized, and can then easily be added to and edited by Atari Forum users, and easy easy easy to update (from 1999 to 2011) by adding content on top and changing outdated links. Add CF Flash info, and also the fact that Atari no longer exists as a company and Bingo. The definitive resource for non German speakers on the net. Today. Period. I rest my case. Ditto. Alakazam.

Hey you know what... Atari ST essential software (The List) was exactly how some FAQ are being done. And we already doing it here.
To gauge the effort needed, best person to ask is AtariSince1989

Yes and look at the size of that thread. It is maintained by one person who has their own life going on outside of the forum. I can't speak for all moderators/admins however I have a lot going on in my life already (10 month old daughter, family, day job, music work, social life etc etc). Having to keep on top of a 'moving' document that could just as easily be maintained by everyone in the wiki seems daft. I don't know what the big resistance is with using the wiki anyway? If somebody wants to try and maintain a FAQ in a thread then go ahead. Good luck!

I don't think it would grab the attention of those people just dropping in with one problem / question / request..
To me it would speak more of a guide to using phpBB
Course such a thing would be useful in addition to, but certainly not instead of a FAQ.

Let's not lose sight of how this discussion started lol

That's easy, we invite forum users to suggest which subjects would be appropriate, and as such the list could be updated on a regular basis.
Calling it anything else would be simply wrong.

As for help or information regarding anything else that isn't "frequently asked about" here in the forum, the location or arrangement / indexing of such info is part of another discussion

I emphasise the word "forum" here as this was the initial idea, a FAQ for the forum.

Question is whether to host it on the forum or the wiki. I had asked SofiST to create a poll for this (purely so I can remain as unbiased as possible). If no post appears in the next day or so, maybe you'd do it RG? I'd rather keep my involvement in this down to getting the job done. ;)

Sure no worries 8)

This is the point... to stop people from thinking that the FAQ means "Atari ST FAQ".
It was going to the phpBB FAQ instead.
So if we change it to "Forum help" it would be clear of what it is, which was the guide to using phpBB

It seems like AtariSince1989 FTP site also contains the csas Atari ST FAQ which is combined from 3 parts.
This is the best one so far. May be target for inclusion into the Wiki.

It seems as decided. I will not write here what I expect - who read my posts may guess it.
I looked into Atari hard disk quick FAQ made by Greenious some years ago (PDF doc). It is good, but not flawless. Not complete, now little obsolete and there is a number of incorrect infos too. But at least he wrote there that errors may be in.
In any case I will not write in Wiki. Feedback is equal to 0 - not that on other places is much better :D

Faq/guides need not be in wiki.
As long as an url made is available, we can always point to the website from the wiki.
I think making it on your own site is better as you're not restricted to the limitation of wiki formatting.
