Forum search

Postby ppera » Sat May 24, 2008 3:31 pm

I don't know am I dumb, or don't get what writes there, but I find searching pretty limited.
For instance, I search phrase Mega STE, usually it goes by typing "mega ste" . But it works not...
It ignores some entered words often.
Can it be done better? A letter to PHPbb ?

Well then let's move the search facility into the timeout forum since it is useless :|
(That was a joke).

I find that when i am looking for something I enter the keywords into the "find all matches" box, then select "search topic titles only" and also select "display results as topics".
I just did this using "mega ste" as the keywords and got 164 matches.

When I tried this but instead of searching within "topic titles only" i searched within "post subjects and message text" I got 1000 matches - which I assume is the limit for any given search.

I find that the first method I described here often returns the most useful and relevant hits.
If not you can throw me in the timeout forum
(That was another joke).

Again bad English ! It is 'time out'. You have latest warning before banning :D

If search would seek correct phrase "mega st" we would have less hits and faster finding of specific posts.
164 hit is not too many, but I sometimes get much more...

Anyway. I will visit PHPbb site to see some things... Search with PHP and MySQL is really not big deal. I made some simple scripts couple years ago for searching movie subtitles on my site with them. There was more option than here. Btw. site had over milion hits, just to note. But I abandoned it because closing of such sites became regular, somewhere in 2004.
