All three now banned by their IP address .. cheers for the heads up.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Mug, when I hit the "report thread" button on a spam post, do you get visibility of that? Or should we report everything in this thread?

EDIT - PS The spambots have been going a bit silly on the wiki too lately, stupid things. Have banned them all and reverted their edits, should be under control ;-)
Time to implement some kind of captcha, me thinks!

Both booted off .. think I'll add "chongsoft" to my pile of "recognised spammer's domains" :)

It'll be a spam-bot programmed to recognize Forum sites and register on them. Most forums are based on YaBB code, so it probably has an algorithm to find the registration command, set up a user name then post in random recent threads.

Unless there's one of those 'Type these characters exactly to continue' security boxes on the registration screen - in which case it's an actual person who is probably copying and pasting the user names from a computer generated list, then copying and pasting pre-typed BB-code spam into posts.

You can tell, because you can see the [bracketed] commands in the posts. Atari-Forum uses "quotes" around some of it's commands in the brackets, but most forums don't do that, so the text they want to bold/make larger isn't working.

If they don't have code that can defeat captchas, they should only need a human to solve the captcha - the bot could then act normally. But then, we're not really seeing a high volume of spam here; a bot could pretty much take the forum down by filling it up with spam posts rapidly. This is why I suggested requiring a captcha for your first 10-20 posts or so :)
