2018-03-11: invers Software closes on March 31, 2018

Dear clients,
dear colleagues and suppliers:

After 27 years, I have decided to close my software company on March 31, 2018.

For me, everything started in the Atari world, when software and hardware were still not nearly as developed as today and when there was a gold rush mood in the young IT industry.

The opportunity to take over the lead in the already very powerful DTP program Calamus in 1997, brought the decisive thrust forward for my small company. Together with very dedicated developers and customers who gave us repeatedly creative suggestions, we have brought Calamus into the Windows and Mac worlds and could support many avid Calamus users long after the end of the TOS era. Calamus is still alive and often used by private individuals as well as by professionals.

The next big step was the new development of iCalamus, the little brother of Calamus, only available for macOS. Its sleek, intuitive interface and the new possibilities thanks to Apple's powerful operating system led many people without any typesetting and DTP experience to producing documents such as books, brochures, and posters with iCalamus on the Mac.

The support for many other interesting programs that could be offered in many languages thanks to diligent translators, was a third pillar of invers Software, called DSD.net. On this platform, we have offered and supported programs beyond the mainstream with great response.

It was a long, beautiful and exciting time with all of you. I thank all those who were in contact with my company as customers or suppliers, as developers or supporters or otherwise, for the wonderful years.

I'm going to start a new chapter of my life and I am sure to meet again the one or the other. You'll meet always at least twice in life.

As of today, there is a sale discount of 50% on Calamus, all modules, and other programs until the end of the month. If you want to get some, you have to hurry!

Important: As of April 1, 2018, all ordering buttons in all order forms will be switched off (no April fool). The website will stay online in order to keep the applications and information available. I myself can still be reached via the known email addresses if you still need support or have lost a license code.

Thank you very much for everything,
Your Ulf Dunkel

It is always sad when another door in the history of Atari closes, Calamus opened the DTP path for Atari computers as Cubase did for the musical studio, both providing professional functions within the reach of any home user.
I still have an original Calamus (old, monochrome) for my parents' house.
Thanks for the services provided, it has been and still is a marvel at DTP.

Sad... :(

I love Calamus. It was super advance and easy program to use back in 80s and 90s. Unfortunate I did not use it on PC or Mac (I go with Adobe and I was watching as Adobe gradually add stuff from 10 years old Calamus to new InDesign!).
That being sad, I still use Papyrus on PC and Mac, never switch to Word or Excel :)

btw
this Netherlands (?) ad is so weird :)

!!!

This two topic ("The end of Calamus: invers Software closes on March 31, 2018" and "Magic mac open sourced") are in direct connection !!

From german wikipedia Calamus article:

"However, MagicMac (X) only runs on Mac OS X 10.6.8 machines, Mac OS X Lion is no longer supported because the Apple Carbon Framework, originally introduced as a bridge technology from Mac OS to Mac OS X, no longer supports becomes. Andreas "Kaos" Kromke, however, worked on a new Cocoa-based emulator - working title "Atari X", which is in the advanced beta stage and is already running under the Calamus SL R8. Andreas Kromke has discontinued the development of "Atari X" and handed over the source code to Calamus SL developer and distributor Ulf Dunkel."

It is look like that now, when Ulf Dunkel decide to close Calamus and iCalamus further development, that Andreas decide (or both, together with Ulf) to publish MagiC and AtariX source code :)

I own a stock Mega STe... have Calamus 1.09. I see for $50 euro or so I can buy upgrade to SL 2015. Will this run on a Mega STe? TJ

Yes. You will get the Atari version of Calamus anyway. It is part of the package:

Calamus SL is too slow to be usable on a stock Falcon, so I doubt that it will be usable on an MSTE. Also, with only 4Mb I think you will struggle.

Would FPU help? I mean, can Calamus take advantage of that to any of its calculations, or is it more about generic CPU power and memory bandwidth?

2015 requires at least 800x600@256 colours. I had to get at first a 'BlowUP' adapter for it to work more stably on my Falcon, then got the CT60e, then got the SV. Now I just need to find time to use Calamus...

So yeah, it'd work on the Mega STe, if you have a graphics card that'll do 800x600x256 minimum.

Since it appears SL2015 will not work on a stock Mega STe.... how about older versions of SL?

Maybe I can get the last version of SL that did work with a more stock Atari?

Or maybe the CD comes with some older versions too?

If I remeber well, until Calamus SL 99 works on ST mono resolultion. Calamus 2000 and 2002 it requires resolution 640x480, and from 2003 800x600x256k. if need it, I can check.

Anyone going to buy it at 50%? I was looking at it and the wording is rather odd, Seems maybe since I could get an upgrade from the Lite Edition, that getting the Complete would be an extra 25% off? Guess I could email them... :P

Sad news. Calamus was amazing back in the day, and me and a friend used to run a small local DTP business using 1.09n and then SL...

I hope one day someone will tell the whole Calamus behind-the-scenes story, I'm quite interested in the rise and development of Calamus, and all the times it changed hands etc...

Started my own DTP business using Calamus and then went onto Calamus SL - was quite an investment at the time, I used the SL and Mega STE set up until around 2005 when graphics and colour just became too big for my STE, however I always went back to it for no colour/photographic work.

In my opinions Adobe InDesign and Quark Xpress took a long time to catch up to what Calamus had 20 years before.

Sad day - I wish the Calamus team well in their next journey.

Yeah, I really need to find the time to set my Falcon back up after I moved! In the meantime I was going to install it under Aranym, but I have always been stuck on getting the network to work on it, seeing as everything now uses NetworkManager. One day...

Ha, I have a lot of work on it that I need to do. Mainly desolder the internal SCSI terminators, solder on the adapter board, plus take out the motherboard and put it into the Wizztronics case, etc. Anyone know what the progress is on doing Printer emulation through the CosmosEx is yet? Would LOVE to get my color laserjet working for Calamus!

It's not Atari but almost ;-)

Lemkesoft took over the development of iCalamus2 for Mac.

Damn, Calamus was so ahead of its time. I bought Calamus 1.09N, Calamus SL 6/93, Calamus 95 and Calamus 2003 R3. I rarely used the last one, even if Calamus in the STemulator was also clever thing.

Interesting, any way they will support the Atari version still? Not sure about the Mac version, but the Windows version was just wrapped within an Atari ST emulator, which also works great in Wine.
