Twilight screensaver - TT Mint?

Postby EmpireAndrew » Sat May 04, 2019 1:43 pm

I decided I wanted a screensaver on my TT (I used to run one on my ST back in the day) to protect my Atari monitor and no I don't want to manually turn it on and off, spiking the PSU and simply forgetting to do it means it's not practical.

I found and downloaded Twilight which looks fun, but I can't get it to run.

I copied the auto_tl.prg to the auto folder, set it to run before Mint030, copied the desk accessory to the root of C per usual, and also copied over the twilight modules folder to the root of C.

The auto module loads in, but Mint through a:

Process "TWILIGHT" Killed:
MEMORY VIOLATION, Type Super

The type changes depending what flag I set on either the auto prg or the desk accessory...

If I don't run the auto program the desk accessory throws a (proper) error saying Twilight isn't installed correctly, which makes sense.
If I run the auto program but disable the desk accessory there is no crash on startup.

I was under the impression Twilight was compatible with Mint and all Ataris so I'm at a loss why it doesn't work...

I did find an old post on here re running it on a Firebee and it was recommended to remove certain Twilight modules for compatibility reasons with the Firebee so I removed them just in case but it makes no difference. I even tried running the auto program after Mint but again, no difference...

Has anyone got this working? Failing that is there any other known good screensaver I could use (just a blank screen is fine) on a TT+Mint combo?

At my setup it works fine. I had always memory protection off in the mint.ini ...

What are the upsides and downsides to having memory protection turned off vs on?
It seems like it would be a good idea to have it on as I assume it would stop one program from writng into the memory space of another causing corruption or crashes?
But I am new to MINT so...

I just tried turning memory protection off in mint.ini

Twilight now works.

Makes me a bit nervous though...

Memory protection: well, it's kind of a dilemma. :) If you were a developer, having it on is a must. But if you are an user, its benefits are much less visible: you often see a memory violation crash (due to old apps which often ignored the "proper" way of coding clean GEM apps) what rightly angers you, the system is a tiny little bit slower than without MP, ... but as you correctly point out, sometimes it saves your desktop from a total crash because it prevents the offending app from taking the whole system down with it. And last but not least, it often very visibly tells you if there is something wrong with your hardware (memory or disk failing and providing corrupted data).

I may have spoken too soon re Twilight working...

While it no longer crashes, and I can use the demo button to see what a screensaver looks like, it never activates.
I set it to 30 seconds or 2 minutes, and it never kicks in...

EDIT: Just watching it, I notice it does try to kick in but immediately deactivates (ie the desktop flashes away for a fraction of a second)
