Hey all,

I just received my 14mb board from djbase.

Great. If anyone is using this board with any speedups (Skunk, Nemesis, CT,...) please report if it still works or gives some errors.

djbase,

I have installed the board in my falcon, its a stock falcon with a 4gb drive in it, connected with the rf to the tv.
I installed some edo ram in it i got from my work, but only the double sided memory seems te work.
When i install the memory and turn on the falcon, it appears as if the screen is getting up to the required framerate, then i have to turn it off and on again and after the same flickering it shows me the atari logo.

As if the memory needs to warm up or something.

50% of the times the falcon gives me 4 bombs (illegal instruction) after a few minutes of operation (there is no difference if im doing something or not, or using the connected hd.)

I am thinking i might have used the wrong kind of ram, do you have advice which kind of 72 pins ram i need to use?

Regards,

Justin

ps.

The original 4mb atari ram works fine.

Don't use EDO Ram. You will need FPM Ram. The one I have has Micron chips MT4C4M4E8DJ with 60ns.

Is there a difference in using double sided or single sided ram?

It should be single sided with 8 chips.

see this post for dram modules for djbase units and other 16/4 mb type boards

this guy is sound as a £

i can recomend him 101%
cheep fast very friendly and eager to help your needs for older and newer ram and parts
at a cheep rate you find some fpu there also from time to time
so keep an eye on his shop
its always worth a friendly email also.,
state's to europe in 7 days or so
i get atleast 4 at a time
got some 8mb simms also fast page 8 chips a side for my stf and a frank b's machine or 2 to get 4mb
and hardwire it for 4mb adding a simm socket from an old pc m/b
as he had no visible 4mb types i got 8mb {just as good and if 4mb fails you try the other side with a four wire change as redundant ram }

im going to ask him maybe he never thinks to collect or list 4mb simms

2$ 16 mb ram is cool thats $2 for 2X16mb + $6.5 or so post or less

get 2 packs of 2 pcs
just incase try to order with friends in mind

read over the post anyway

i use these pieces with my nemesis added {been working on it }
100% stable

this guy doesnt pay me
i just found a great deal ...!!!
$10 is still less than £10 and euros 10 by far
i cant buy lunch in a decent pub for less than a 10 er. in the uk

be warned with the 'wing' board and djbase type
some cases inside the falcon ..
the rf screens are a different shape
i got past this by using one from an ste...

not that its needed anyway these days.,...
with less rfi around and also less sensative tv signals types like digital
there is little need for the rf screen past muck drops

and i added a bit of close knit net to the underside of the top case to prevent this

ive seen two different shapes of metal
one is a kind of slope like the ste etc
the other much later one is squared .. and the board doesnt fit neet...

Sorry for the crap photos.

I am not 100% sure but I think Simbo was referring to a problem I had with all three of the Falcons I've got access to. They all have 90' a step in the shielding which goes above where the SIMM sits.

Image

Here you can see that the shielding cannot be put back on after fitting the SIMM adapter. There is not enough room without the SIMM let alone with it.

I was a little bit disappointed when it did not just fit back together perfectly. However a few minutes with a pair of TIN SNIPS should work. I'll have to do the metal box over the floppy drive too which also does not fit :(

My falc came with the square metal shielding.
It came off since mid 90s when I got my 14MB memory upgrade.
Not much issues with interference what so ever, even on my monitor (back then).
On the TV, there seems to be some minor diagonal interferences.

What did you do with the internal speaker though? Ditch it?

Nah, it's there.
Sits between the HDD and FDD cables.
Sometimes I wonder if the magnetic part of the speaker is killing my floppies
But frankly, I don't get so many bad floppy.

Yes, that top shield must (or should) be removed. But what other shield is there around? I know only that one in the pictures above.

That shield comes in two pieces. The big main one in these photos and an extra rectangular one just a little bit bigger than the floppy disk drive which it covers. The two almost mate up just next to the speaker.

It's OK to leave the bottom one as it is.

Oh, on my is a small piece of metal that covers part of the fdd.
That have to come off too as it seems to be mounted on the larger one.
