You CAN browse modern sites on an Atari :)

Postby mzry » Sun Jul 30, 2017 4:09 am

I've asked this question before but it usually just ends up with SSL/speed/etc roadblocks. I was just playing around on my EasyMint installation and found that the text based Lynx browser was installed already. I typed 'lynx' into the shell and bam, I get a really fast loading web browser! It's obviously not as flashy as a GUI browser, but it is perfect for Ataris as pages load fast and you can access modern sites.

ps sorry if this is old news, it's just an exciting discovey for me as I am only just beggining to scratch the surface of what unix apps are available to me :)

Yes, if you call that browsking. You might also try Links or Elinks, which are more advanced than Lynx, and still text based.

This is a reason why I advocate for an Atari browser that does not blindly interpret CSS.

It's actually very good once you get used to it. You can go to all major search engines, find information easily, browse wikipedia etc etc.

Another awesome discovery! ncftp from the command line is SO FAST. Way faster than using litchi or aftp, plus super easy to understand.

I love ncftp. What I would love even more is if we could get a Debian/MiNT m68k distribution. Still have your standard stack of Thing(or TeraDesk) and Mint kernel, but have a nice userland of Debian so I could 'apt install bash' and get a recent version, etc.

If I had more time / knowledge, I'd try to do that very thing. I think there was someone who tried to do a Gentoo port, but compiling new software all the time sounds terrible on older machines.
