Do you know someone who owns a Sparrow / FX-1?

Postby mikro » Thu Feb 09, 2017 3:27 am

One can find some old posts, an eBay listing from time to time... but it's always very anonymous. Some mysterious person appears on the forum, offering to sell etc.

Do you actually know someone who owns the machine, ideally in working order? I would be pretty awesome to get a dump of TOS 2.07 for instance, exploring its HW configuration etc. All we could see so far is just a bunch of motherboard photos.

It's believed about 100 - 150 units had been manufactured, they must be somewhere. Sparrows can be found for sale as early as in 1995.

I googled TOS 2.07 and found this: http://www.verycomputer.com/10_dff73afade8004ec_1.htm (first post)
<face palm>

Another idea. Is it possible the official TOS sources has a v2.07 build option?

I think the guy who wrote the post about the BlueTTit was joking about that one!

I know Curt sold one off in early 2000s on eBay and I want to say it went for rather cheap, I was just tied up financially in a ton of Jaguar protos at the time to be overly worried about the Sparrow, though it would have been nice to own.

Yeah, they are not worth that much as they are largely incompatible with the final product but that's exactly why I'd love to run some tests on it -- how its memory map looks like, what hardware it has, ... it would be quite pointless yet interesting detective work. ;-)

Just FYI, I've been digging through some sites and forums, I've been able to identify following S/Ns so far:

A3 22 23 0200 06 [PCB]
A3 25 11 0010 11 [case]
A3 25 3? ???? ?? (rev.2) [PCB, photo cut, case above: A3 25 11 0010 11]
A3 25 31 0000 08 [mentioned in an auction with photos long gone, offered both PCB and case; most likely PCB]
A3 25 32 0000 25 (rev.2) [PCB]
A3 26 12 0010 33 [case]
A3 26 13 0010 34 [case]
A3 26 13 0010 35 [case]
A3 26 13 0010 45 [case]
A3 26 32 0000 32 (rev.2) [PCB]
A3 26 33 0000 34 (rev.2) [PCB, case above: A3 26 13 0010 34]
A3 26 33 0000 35 (rev.2) [PCB, case above: A3 26 13 0010 35]

Anybody cares to make a guess about their meaning? :) I'd say there's a pretty good chance the last one has something to do with the overall number produced but whether one should read it as "032" and "145" or just plain "32" and "45", I don't know (I guess it's safe to assume "1045" doesn't mean 1045th piece ;-))

EDIT: I'd say there's a good chance all the Sparrows but the first one are rev.2, as the first motherboard really is different and it's from 02/1992.

Btw there's one "special" Sparrow, 110V with a completely different S/N: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/212866 ... -prototype ... note how the S/N (A1 1005059) doesn't fit at all (and it's not on paper -- maybe it's just a ST/STE case?) plus the motherboard differs in some details (like the bottom left red capacitors, on all the other Sparrow photos I've seen they are in an "L" shape)

EDIT: I'm stupid, the PCB has another S/N, it's a3 22 2 3 020006! Added to the list.

Ha, found this: viewtopic.php?t=24769#p228032 (thanks, Markus!)

So the standard S/Ns can be deciphered as: "A3" factory, May/June 1992.

The rest is bit blurry because control codes do not match (it should be "0" and not "1" or "3") and also the TV norm should be PAL (there are two NTSCs) as all of them are 220V machines. And last but not least, sequential number doesn't make much sense, how can 01011 be from 05/92 and 00034 from 06/92?

As for the special one: PCB is from February 1992 (!), the case from December 1991 (!!!), the rest is again very questionable.

I've been able to pair some more photos (see the edited list above). From that it's clear that the cases for rev.2 had been manufactured two months before actual PCBs, there were two batches of the rev.2 (05/1992 and 06/1992) and the fourth number (00x0) serves as an id for PCB (x=0) and case (x=1). That gives us following unique Sparrows (listed with x=0, i.e. PCBs)

rev.1 ("rev.1" not explicitly written on the PCB as such):
A3 22 23 0200 06
A3 26 33 0000 40

rev.2:
A3 25 31 0000 08
A3 25 31 0000 11 ("calculated" from the case s/n A3 25 11 0010 11)
A3 25 32 0000 25
A3 26 32 0000 32
A3 26 32 0000 33 ("calculated" from the case s/n A3 26 12 0010 33)
A3 26 33 0000 34
A3 26 33 0000 35
A3 26 33 0000 40
A3 26 33 0000 45 ("calculated" from the case s/n A3 26 13 0010 45)
A3 26 33 0000 48

Also, this makes only 48 publicly known Sparrows in the world.

I JUST FINISHED site (web database) for entering Atari serial numbers: http://milan.kovac.cc/atari/chipmunk/index.php

please use it! If we type enough serial numbers, we can make some conclusion regarding Atari computer production!
(and report any error on site if you find it!)

Thanks

Try to register it on atari.org to make it easier to remember. :) Plus announce, of course.

Also, some auto-competition / validation would be useful (maybe later?) so people can realise they missed one digit or so. And yes, the resolver.

Great idea. I've added my STE's details.

What's interesting is that the serial number for one of the Falcons on there indicates it was manufactured in 1994, when it's commonly believed that Atari stopped making them in late 1993.

This is interesting, you should open another thread for this which is better recognized by the audience. I just linked it to the german forum. http://forum.atari-home.de/index.php?to ... 75.new#new - maybe someone wants to link it to other Atari forums, atari-age for example?

Would it make sense to add also original Atari peripherials like sh/megafile hard disks, slm laser printers, smm-804 matrix printer, sf floppy drives, monitors, mice?

Thanks for interesting!

I open new thread in "News" viewtopic.php?f=28&t=31345

@mirko I sent email to Evil regarding atari.org and I will implement these things but I need documentation for serial number structure (I have only for Falcon right now)

@1st1 thanks for sharing! Can you made list of Atari computers and peripherals (or can you point me to site where I can find it) ?

@junosix, thanks for using it.

Ah! Of course. Is it worth having a separate entry for the C-Lab ones in the drop-down list?

How do you know that Falcon is C-Lab made? Is there a C-Lab sticker?

As you can see, all my Falcons are Atari made (have only Atari stickers) but mikro claim that they are C-Lab?? How can i check/confirm this?

Calimero, by the date. :) There's no Atari Falcon manufactured after 1993. Also, the S/N is reset to zero in 1994.

EDIT: You have only one Falcon listed from 1994 and it follows this "rule" -- so somebody had sold you a C-Lab Falcon in Atari case then.
