Falcon serial numbers

Postby calimero » Sun Mar 17, 2013 2:08 am

Hi,

is there any thread where we could post serial numbers of our Falcons? if there isn't any, maybe this one should be pinned!?

** and does anybody have clue what serial numbers represent? **
(and why serial on motherboard and bottom of case are different?? - should they be the same?? - maybe my case and motherboard are from different Falcons :D)

My Falcon numbers and board revision printed on motherboard:

CA401332-003
REV - D/C
1992.
Y 43602 007192

and serial from bottom case:

ATARI FALCON030 UK
4MB
Y 43702 2 004176

motherboard-t.jpg

bottom-t.jpg

btw does anybody know how many Falcons are made in total?

Some controversy there, but wasn't the (mostly) agreed total around 20-30k?

(with approx. 20k being what Atari produced, and over being the C-LAB MK-1, MK-2, MK-X, etc)

There is a PCB serial number "deciphering" section in the Falcon Service Guide:
falcon_serial.png

Would make mine #11903 produced September '93. I've some doubt regarding correctness, however, since I have a 0 as "CONTROL CODE" which would make it pilot production...

Markus, that's highest number I've seen so far, my Falcons are crawling around #2000 and #4000. ;-) Anyone with a higher number? http://www.atari-wiki.com/index.php/Ata ... _revisions suggests there's one with Y44902000977 (i.e. 09/1994) but this looks like an early C-Lab one, esp. judging from the S/N.

Next close is #11738, i.e. Markus still wins. ;-)

EDIT: (some time spent on googling later...) I couldn't find any Falcon motherboard starting with 12000 and later, hmm. Maybe the numbers of 20k+ are hugely overestimated?

Thats the number that quite many years ago ( at least 10 ) I have read somewhere by Rodolphe Czuba saying that there were about 12k Falcons produced.

Well, according to my "research", this definitely holds so far. And Markus might have gotten one of the *last* Falcons by Atari then. ;-)

I only have a Falcon Motherboard with the serial number Y43602006466

So June 93?

Would be interested to know if it was a C-Lab as it did have some mods to the headphone and mic ports (removed jacks and filters which I've reinstated)

Also has an Afterburner 040 fitted.

Yep, 06/1993. I'd say you're safely on the Atari side here. :)

According to interview (October 1993.) with Bob Gleadow, published by ST-Computer magazine:
http://stcarchiv.de/stc1993/10/intervie ... ob-gleadow

About 13000-14000 sold (40 percent in Germany alone), 4164 in stock. So it is close to 20.000

Well, if there will not be found serial number above 12k than this is just a corpo lie.

I checked one of my falcons and its below 3k.

It doesn't have to be lie -- maybe they sold it to someone and they didn't sell it afterwards. That would also mean that there's a pile of 2000-3000 Falcons somewhere. ;) Also don't forget the "industrial Falcons", who knows, maybe the last batch went directly to the USPS?

Probably next to the ET carts. :-)

I will check my two and see what they are. How did Clab numbering work?

I think it's the same but the sequential number is reset to #000001. If your Falcon has >93 year of production, it must be a C-Lab.

Or the remaining production stock has been sold to C-lab. Do we know if C-Lab has ever produced new boards or only used extra Atari stock?

Just recently I read that they really did order new boards. It was a Taiwan company, called EFA (you can like them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/EFA-Manu ... 4805562164 :D), same company which had manufactured Lynx and Falcons for Atari. Also, the new S/Ns (new year of production + zeroed) would suggest that.

Any chance they would have the molds for the cases?

Found the source of that claim: http://www.stcarchiv.de/stc1995/05_sylvie.php

So it seems around the end of year 1994 C-Lab had indeed ordered a new batch of Falcon motherboards (and casings+keyboards) which got delivered sometime around 08/1995. Until then they had been selling original Atari units, if I understood the article correctly.

Mine are:
Y4 33 0 2 000059 - #59 pilot production?
B3 34 2 2 000192 - #192

They both differ in terms of PCB color a lot, just as if they were done in 2 different fabs (Y4 vs B3).
One is dark green, the other is more pale green.
