zDesk

Postby Zorro » Thu Feb 28, 2013 7:01 pm

I'd like to advise you( for those who are interested  ) that I get back to work on zDesk.

I will keep you informed about the progress and, at the same time, I will post on this thread screenshots and videos.

[EDIT: 03-09-2013]

Let it be said, let it be done. I did a short video with the news features that I have coded over the last 2 weeks.

In this video, you will see:

- The "sidebar frame". Only the file navigation at the moment but unlike zView, all is in real time.
- The toolbar.
- The toolbar editor... The work has not been completed. In the futur, I would like to add "customs buttons" editable via script( GEMScript? home cooked scripting language? Rexx? Etc..)
- The "files filter". Well, nothing to say, the name is quite explicit
- Others little things.

I have forgotten to show the file history feature but I will do that the next time.

http://youtu.be/PEgWvJ3ZXEM

PS: this video is available in 720p.

[EDIT: 03-27-2013]

The new functions were quite a lot of work, but I am rather proud of the result:

- Multi-threaded thumbnails creation is implemented.
- Thumbnail cache( with "intelligent" update if the file is modified).
- Many modification "under the hood" ( jpeg are read 10% faster, bugs fixes, etc..)

Compared to zView, the image browser is much much better. I can say outright that now, zView is definitely obsolete.

[EDIT: 05-31-2013]

Almost 2 months since my last post.
Due to my new professional activities, I have less free time.
I thought to release a first beta before this summer but now, as I have only 3 or 4 hours a week for zDesk on Saturday afternoon, I think that the first public version will not be release before september.

In any case, I will keep you updated.

Here are the new features since my last post:
- bookmarks support.
- files' drag and drop.
- easy icons' assignation and replacement.
- folder creation.
- many little modifications and bugs fixes.

As usual, I have made a short video:

I don't have any other user account( as I recall  )

I registered on this forum since years but I think that this is my first post.

Very glad to hear that, Zorro. But I'm surprised at the same time. Why the change of heart, if I may ask?

Thank you all for your interest :D

To Jean-François:

Some months ago, I got a mail from Matthias Wittau; he offered to send me a Firebee to test.

I did not reply. Not because I'm impolite but because I didn't know what to say.

On the one hand, I wanted to try it but on other hand, If I accepted, I would have felt obliged to produce something and and I wasn't sure that I would have found the motivation again.

Time passed and things had moved in the right direction.

Vincent Rivière( blessed be He :) ) has done an enormous amount of work, MiNT 1.18 is nearly released, there were news coder like you and others, the Firebee is a little success( it seems that at least x machines are sold/around), Olivier has done a good job with this AES, the f*cking malloc() bug in the mintlib has been found, etc...

In short, today, I want to code again.

To Wongck:

I am proud to see that coder like you( who makes cool stuffs  ) uses my work.

About the codecs itself: Mirko should release a last version of zView 1.x( only bugs fixes) with a new codec format which will use less memory( much less) and will be faster to launch.

To Protos:

Salut mon pote des nuits de ma jeunesse
J’espère qu'on aura de nouveau l'occasion de papoter ensemble !

PS: I will try to post a video the next week.

A few weeks ago, beginning of January. But no hurry. I am waiting for answers from some people for a muuuch longer time! ;)
And I consider this post as a answer – and all my respect to you about talking publicly about your feelings and motivation.

Zorro wrote: I did not reply. Not because I'm impolite but because I didn't know what to say.
Well, I am very happy that you read the mail, and that it was somehow motivating. That impact of (as well) my communication-tries is much more I than I could wish! I am very happy that you are back now!

Zorro wrote: On the one hand, I wanted to try it but on other hand, If I accepted, I would have felt obliged to produce something and and I wasn't sure that I would have found the motivation again.
That is a real problem for several good developers. We have to think about how to minimize "pressure" if we give the development machines away.
Nevertheless, once you feel ok with it, you should have it for some months. ;)

Zorro wrote: Vincent Rivière( blessed be He :) ) has done an enormous amount of work,
Indeed! There is nothing to add.

Zorro wrote: In short, today, I want to code again.
Thats one of the best news of this year! I am looking foreward to your upcoming projects. ;)

Is this the zDesk as seen from the link below that is an Atari TOS Desktop?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCFBtIOMx7Y

If yes, that excited me greatly!

That is one video that excited me to get back into Atari.

Hope this is what you are working on.

This solidifies me buying a new Firebee!

Thanks, I will let you know

First, I have some months of "generic" work so I can make the job with Aranym( as my Falcon is dead :( ).

When I reach the stage of optimisation or specific things - for example, unlike others desks, I would like that the USB/SD disks would be automatically mounted/unmounted to the desktop - I will contact you to ask if a development machine is available.
