project idea: ECL signal adapter for TT-High...

Postby supergau » Mon Dec 17, 2012 12:22 pm

Hello people,

still gives my observations many users apparently in the fora to the consequence, the ones in the possession of an Atari are TT and also use this.
Unfortunately, there isn't any available possibility to this day of using the high TT resolution of 1280 x960 B&W without using an ECL monitor.
Since ECL monitors have become rare (I still have an EIZO 6500), another solution probably would be very in demand.
I have written to Mr Förster (inventronik. de) after that, whether such an adapter would be possible and also really realizable.

Here is his answer:
"The high TT resolution is caused by a special graphic chip. I think that one could mix the MONO video signal on three video amplifiers and thus then should be able to steer for every monitor. However, this is rather an analogous hardware. This signal could alternatively be processed also digitally of course, DACs then should be established on video again to be able to steer for VGA monitors for example, however. In the case of DVI you could process completely digitally. I would become otherwise the effort isn't worthwhile if a case, however, gets only active when some users find themselves actual into".

With other words:
If sufficient interested parties are found, it could be done... " :D
What does it look like - who of yours operates a TT and does have interest in such an adapter ?

best regards
supergau

I managed this with no external power source!

I think a good ECL to TTL chip would work, on a decent PCB. Shouldn't be more than £20

I already have MC100EPT25DTG translator. But the chip is very small so I ordered DIL raiser for it.
Other thing is the chip is only LVTTL so 3.3V power is necessary.
I hope the raiser will come soon and I can test it propely

i think an svga LCD monitor will display it fine given the correct cable and some passive elements to transform
ECL + - video { so ground is TTL _0-5v) = (+vid / -vid) video output

ill look over the signal but if i remember its just a single mono ECL output
this as said can be spread across all three RGB lines
sync can be separated from this path {to preserve timings}
i think this is the main trick here

no box required just passive transformation perhaps a ttl comparator can be used instead of the cores

try here from many years ago sometimes you tell people and because it looks simple and has no ic they just dont get it
viewtopic.php?t=8318
or a pro unit on ebay for a score {too late i got that one for a video game board i bought}
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Extron-RGB-20 ... 2575401375
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksi ... &_from=R40
here is another buy it now 20 quid
you will need a BNC to 19pin SVGA cable much like mac pros use i have a spare if someone would like it
perhaps you can use the standard video output and simply switch the TT to hires
? anyone tried this
i think modern SVGA may just simply display ECL mode in native resolutions like 1280 etc... from the standard port
just because you switch mode does not mean that the video is cut off to RGB and the sync also .. restricted
it just means other signal ports are enabled
before doing anything with ECL i would just simply enable ECL mode and TT hires and see what comes out the standard port
at the same time....

you just connect a small wire between the ground and the Xmono line pin 9 to pin 10 see what happens on the svga normal setup...

I want one !

I remember a TT test in atari magazine, Cubase in score mode with a lot of traks was running quite smoothly in TT hi res. I really want to see that !

I've seen on eBay some ECL to RGB adapters from extron for £15

Well, I got a Extron RGB202 Plus from *bay and now I need a cable from TT to the Extron.

I have a TTM194 cable that is a db-15 male to db-9.

using a dvm, here is the pinout. I'm not sure if this is 100%

DB-9(male) --- DB-15(male)
pin 1 to pin 4 (Hi Rez Mono +)
pin 2 to pin 5 (Gnd)
pin 3 to pin 13 (Hsync)
pin 4 to pin 14 (Vsync)
pin 6 to pin 15 (Hi Rez Mono -)
pin 7,8 to pin 10 (Ground)
pin 9 to pin 9 (Mono Detect)

The pinout for the Extron Input 1 is:
1 Ground
2 N/C
3 Red Video
4 Green Video/Sync on Green
5 Blue Video
6 N/C
7 N/C
8 Horizontal/Composite Sync Input
9 Vertical Sync Input

How can I make a cable for TT High? I'm not sure where to connect High Resolution + and - (pin 4 and 15 on TT)

I'm guessing:
Extron to TT
1 to 5,9,10
2
3
4
5
6
7
8 to 13
9 to 14

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that almost looks like the cable I have. I'm guessing that the Atari ECL pinout is non-standard (if there was ever a standard?).

I just need to know how the High Res Mono + and - (4 and 15) connect to the RGB pins (3,4,5) on the extron.

I have some update on the ECL signal adapter. The prototype is basically mostly complete. It needs an additional work on H-sync and a power source. Hopefully this can be done in next few weeks. The display quality is superb crispy and sharp. Unfortunately the pictures are not the best, I will try to take and submit better ones.

The adapter connected to ECL/VGA monitor port in TT:

TT High on a generic flat panel. The photo quality is not the best I will try to take another one.

I will keep you updated.

Nice work! Well done so far - it looks neat and close to completion. :)

Great! Looks nice!

Does it support passthrough of the color mode VGA signals also (switch?) or do you need to unplug if you want color?

What are those little red arrows for on the PCB?

I suppose this project is not related to Wolfgang Förster's one mentioned above?

Again, well done! Most importantly, assemble the adapter on a flying lead, there's too much hanging on the TT socket and there's usually not enough room behind the TT in a studio to plug the board in and guide the lead to the monitor. (Got the T shirt).

Soon as you have a price let us know. I would like 5, yes I have 5 TTs with 2 iffy TTM 195s taking up much too much room in the studio.

Cubase on a TTM 195 is excellent, full page of score, very useful. Onward!!!

Looks nice, but I thought it would be simplier device.

BTW would it be possible to fix the TT VGA somehow?

Currently there is no support for a mode switch with pass-through. I would like to see it done but there is a worry that it may impact image quality. I'm going to do my best to have it included.

This project is not related to any other projects that have ever been undertaken in this matter.
