Falcon & PC file Transfer??

Postby KLund1 » Fri Oct 16, 2009 9:45 am

Simple question: how do you transfer many files downloaded from the internet to a PC, then to a Falcon? Floppies are way to small for this. ST's have Ultra Satan Disk. This dose not work with Falcons. Ethernet is not a simple, nor an inexpensive option. Perhaps I'm missing something her? What do all of you do? I'd toss my STE and MSTE if I'd get my new Falcon to do the same things an ST can be made to do! Almost all games and applications I'd run are already available to run from a Falcon from Dbug or other similar archives.
Making a PC active partition on the Falcon HD, cracking the case, pulling the HD out, installing with a correct adapter in my large desktop PC, coping files, and reversing the process, dose not seem to me an efficient use of resources.
Is there something I've missed (I'm sure that is the case)! in these forums? If so please point me to the way.....

Ghostlink and null modem cable.
Sting and a null modem cable to make a tcp/ip network and use ftp.
Telnet and a null modem cable for telnet file transfers.
IDE to CF adapter and use either Linux or some of the ways presented for Ultrasatan to mount it to the pc.
Ethernet.
You can also get a netusbee and wait for someone to develop a USB flash disk driver.
Finally a SCSI CD-ROM drive.
Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas.

I use any of the 2 methods on my system:
1. Network - either FTP or just mount the Windows shared folder.
2. SD card

and of course floppies

In fact all these are also working for my TT.

Like he said, I use an IDE DVD drive and just burn CD's, then transfer.

Works great with my Lite-on DVD writer, ExtenDOS Pro and CDWriter.

ISTR the falcon has a problem with two ide devices, if this is not true then you could use a CF-IDE adaptor with your internal disk and use a compact flash card to exchange

an alernative is a scsi-ide-cf adaptor setup like i use in my TT (see my website for details)

does give you scope for gigs of storage, but is not hot-swappable

Er....80 gig IDE hard drive and LiteOn IDE DVD drive... no problems

I am using an adapter I got from Wizztronics though - maybe that takes
care of any problems?

No issues with 2 devices on IDE bus.
My Falcon - IDE 20 GB HDD and an IDE Acer DVD writer.
My SD-crad reader is on my external case.
It's easier for me to use SD card as it's normal copy on both system.

No such luxury for me. Mine is just a replaced 44pin IDE cable that supports 2 drive instead of the normal 1 drive cable from Atari.
Thereafter converting it to a 40pin header via 44pin-40pin adapter from ebay
The thing cost less than USD10.

Fast, and very reliable. Cheap.

I have a simple write up done years ago on my webpage on using serial-link to do file transfer between PC & falcon. That was way before I had my network/DVD/SD-card reader for the Falc.

It tells you what software and settings to use. Only assumes that you have both connected up by a NULL-cable.
May be useful to you, KLund1.

Damn, that's a good idea - I let one of these go when it turned up in the college "take before it gets dumped" pile recently...

SD-Card Reader? Is that a SatanDisk? If so, I was under the impression that they could not be connected to a Falcon. If it could be, please explain. I got an USD for my STE, & MSTE. If it could eaily, also work with the Falcon, my world would be full of X_mas lights and fancy harp music.....

I'm gonna have to turn off the fairy lights and fancy harp music, sorry..

UltraSatan connects to the ASCSI port on the back of the older Atari machines. The Falcon comes with a proper SCSI II port instead, they are not pin compatible.

What do you mean, pin compatible - the connector layout is different, or more? Can an adapter be made from ACSI->SCSI?

pin compatible is an electronics term, it means you can exchange one device for another that is a electrical direct replacement for the original, what wongck is saying is: the ultrasatan will not work on the falcon

On the Falcon you can use this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19737

If you use HD-Driver and MiNT or MagiC you should be able to read FAT32-partitioned SD-cards. I currently do this but with CF-card by formatting them "TOS+DOS compatible" with HD-Driver. I also have an IDE->SD adapter similar to the one I linked to above, but I have not tried it yet.

No I got the same SD card reader as Jo mention in his post.
Except mine are from China, and cost less than USD5 including postage.
They are cheapo stuff... bad devices that takes over the IDE bus.
Trash your my HDD.... actually, so I had give it it's own bus alone.

Not exactly me but CiH.
Anyway, I don't own a UltraSatan nor a Satan Disk 8)
So I don't know if they work but common sense states that there is no ASCI port on my Falc, so I can't test it.

This is the exact SD-reader device that I have.

I did not even bother formating it on my Atari, since the SD cards are already FAT32 by default.
Mint happily reads all my SD cards from 256MB to 2 GB.
I just do a copy on both my Falc and Windoze to transfer files. Using the SD Card from my camera without any reformat.
I don't own any 4GB or 8GB SD card as my camera can't take them (read as old camera model).

joska, do you just have that SD reader hang out the back of your Falcon? And isn't there a master slave jumper so it will not kill the HD on the same bus?
