Seems like there were a couple out there - Does EdHack (sp?) meet your needs? Or
perhaps this:

http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl/Atari/SED

I know there was a freeware one that I used to use to undelete
accidentally deleted files, but I can't remember the name of it.. :(

HTHs.

KNIFE ST was one that I found myself using suspiciously far too often way back in day.

Very powerful program.

Not entirely sure on whether it did actual HD sectors though? - its been a while.

Thanks guy, I will try those. I think the best bet is SED.
As for KnifeST, I have that -- does it do harddsk?
My old harddisk suddently became accessible but only seeing 1 of 3 partitions (drive c: only).
I believe that the partition table of d: & e: are whacked but theoritically I can still see the sectors if I have a sector editor.

OK, all no-go. :( /
Seems to be asking for partition before I can edit anything.
Like I said I need to edit a non-recognisable partition.
Just there is nothing can do it on an Atari.

Yes, this seems annoyingly normal.

Sector editors read the sectors of each partition, not of the actual drive.

You need a low level editor that reads the disk and not the partitions and even on a PC, software that does that costs thousands and is not usually available to the public.

Ppera's drive image tool worked for me when I had a knackered 1gig drive inside my TT. Read the whole drive in as an image and then did it's best to recover what files it could.

No idea what version he's coded up to but it'll be over on his site somewhere.
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

Yes, I downloaded that months ago -- thanks for reminding me. :D
Several months back tried to read the dead HDD on the falc & PC but couldn't.
Now that same HDD seems to be readable on the falc.
Will try on the PeeCee later. Fingers crossed.

Last year, someone in my office sent off an personal HDD to recover some stuff -- cost was €2K -- the same cost of a very highend gaming rig!
He said it was worth it because it contain some stuff that the wife needs...

I used to have access to software the police use, that can recover data from a Hard Disk that have physically been cut in half.
The same software can recover data that has been wiped over, up to 6 times... How thats possible I dont know but the software does exist and I have used it.

This was when I had the shop mind you.

And I seriously hope that this guys wife has learned a very valuable lesson in backing up.

Well, after exercising the HDD for 6 hours on Ppera DriveImage program, all 3 partitions were able to be read! :D :D
Not sure what happened but in the morning only 1st partition was readable.
Left the PC to read the 2nd partition but it hang Drive Image for 6 hours until I rebooted (after lunch).
After that all 3 partitions can be read, even on my Falcon.
Managed to read all my old stuff from it :D

Something just cannot be explained.

Maybe a kick up the arse was the best medicine?

Don't have access to such cool tools, only Encase.
One of my engineers is trained on Encase, and we have that tool in the office.
Luckily I did not have to activate him to get my data off my bad Atari HDD.
It would be a real challenge because he has no knowledge of TOS FS.

I think the 6 hour do actually loosen the old joints as this HDD was from mid 90s.
No seriously, it must be some moisture/condensation that drove off by excessive use

TOS FS is close enough to DOS, for it to not concern him Id have thought.
But as you say you have it sorted, so thats no longer a worry.

I would however, strongly suggest, that you get your data off it ... NOW!

If its from the 90's then there may be a strong chance, that, although you have freed it up and its working, then there may very well be a very high chance that its also about to fail too!

You get this with engines... you have one that has not run for several years and before, it was fine, and oyu get it running and its fine but then all of a sudden, it fails because of some little thing like a 20p rubber seal and it costs you a further £600 for have teh engine rebuilt because of it... ( Well, thats how much it cost me !! LOL ) so you dont want that happening and you losing your data after this happening do you?

I am not going to use it any more.
After copying the stuff over, I repartition it to single partition and wrote over all of it with several movie files and dump it into the bin.
