Image conversion...

Postby Dal » Wed Jan 16, 2008 1:17 pm

Does anyone know of a good app (Falcon, ST, Mac or Windoze) that can convert JPG and GIF images into the Atari IMG format?

I have a few background images that I would like to convert to work on the Atari. So the app in question would need to be capable of converting to 1, 2, 4 and 8 biplane IMG files.

XNview (on Windows and I think there's a native Atari version) seems to be able to read in Atari formats but not a user of it so couldn't comment on it's export options.

I just had a look at my XNView and whilst it reads most Atari formats I don't think it can save GEM IMG's. It can save Degas PI1 and Amiga IFF if thats any help.

GEM IMG appears on the supported formats list. I'll have a play with it and see if I can export JPEGs to it. The concern is whether the number of bitplanes can be set for those who run in different colour modes.....

I suppose the alternative is to convert to spectrum 512? Then use spectrum 512 to save each one individually as img (can't remember if img is supported - it's been too many years).

The only IMG I can see in the Save list is Vivid Raytracer and that only seems to support True Colour anyway.

Imagecopy 4 will do that trick in 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 & 24 bit depths, I have tried it with JFIF95->IMG and GIF->IMG images and it works for me.

Sorry but can't help with PNGs. I think these were defined after the ST retired?
If you run Linux or Mac OSX, the GIMP may be of some help or Paint shop pro 3 or less for W9x.
BTW Imagecopy 4 is ST/STE/Falcon compatible running TOS :)

Excellent - yes I had another look at the doc for Nconvert and it only reads GEM IMG. So looks like ImageCopy will be the way forward after I've converted the PNG's into JPG (no problem).

Question now is does anyone know where I can get ImageCopy 4?

Word of caution - convert a .PNG file to .GIF, not .JPG.

Unless it is a photo, images will compress just as well into .GIF, and you will not lose definition / gain artifacts, which is a side effect of .JPG compression.

There isn't any lossless JPEG (well, sort of). There has been a actually lossless JPEG format, but it never had any popularity, and no application supported it (unless it was an experimental one).
Then there is this JPEG-LS format (yawn another lossless wannabe leader) with HP highly involved, called LOCO. There is an Adobe plugin for it, but I don't know how widespread is it (and how useful is it, too).

However, Xnview deals JLS files, so... :-)

But since GIF has an 8 bit colour palette, you will loose colour definition. Banding or dithering will IMHO affect the image quality more than jpeg compression.

True, but if it isnt a photo then the chances of it containing > 256 colours / you noticing banding is less. If there are things like large areas with colour gradients, then yes, you'll see banding.

Horses for courses I guess - depends on the image, and depends on the jpg compression level used.

Yep, nice place. You'll like ImageCopy - I used it to convert a pic of Gandolph for use as a wallpaper/desktop
on my Falcon.
