Nova VME, jumper settings and ET4000/w32i (upgrade to 4mb?)

Postby leech » Mon Mar 23, 2020 3:58 am

So I have two of the wonderful Nova VME boards from Frank, and since we are all in self-isolation, I figured I may have some time to put them to good use!

I have an ET4000/w32i, which said in the listing to have 1mb of memory, but counting the memory chips on it that are 256k each, and there are 8, that sure sounds like 2mb. And for fun, I ordered another 8 chips.

Now the question is, how do I set this up on the TT or Mega STe?

There are two jumpers on the board, one I believe is for Mega STe/TT, but part of the text is cut off, and the other seems to be for memory addresses. Would be awesome if I can get a 4mb card to work.

ET4000AX or W32i is set to MSTE even in a Atari TT. ET4000 have 8 chips 256kx4 in total it is 1MB. W32i can have 1MB or 2MB. W32 do not work, only W32i works. See the driver on the website from Idek ...

According to wikipedia, The /W32i revision featured an interleaved 32-bit memory bus (with 2MB+ of memory) to improve memory throughput. It supports a maximum of 4 MB of video memory, though most boards featuring the chip typically offer a maximum expansion of 2MB or less."
It has 8 chips now and I bought another 8. So it should at least be 2mb at that point, right? If there is no other hard ware change required, then I will try to give it a shot later today, thanks!

@leech: Just curious. Can you post a photo of your card? Like Frank, I've never seen a W32i upgradeable to 4 MB.
The most common cards are slight variations of this one, which only has 1 MB:

This is the one I have, I have not put in the other chips yet.
Edit: stupid 500kb attachment limit...

You can upgrade the card with 8 pieces 256kx4 chips to 2MB. The speed must be the same.

OK, it has 1 MB right now, not 2 MB.

Ah, but so filling up the empty slots should in theroy give me 2mb. I used to have a chart of video resolution capabilities based on video ram. No idea where it went though. Wikipedia used to have one too, but haven't been able to find it.
So is it only some rare ET4000/W32i and Mach64 that can top off at a theoretical 4mb?

I think 4MB is a ISA ATI MACH64 only. Not all ISA MACH64 can be updated to 4MB. A lot of these cards are only 1MB or 2MB max ...

I still haven't gotten around to trying this yet, worked most of the weekend on putting the incognito in my 800.
