Looking for STE YM musics suggestions

Postby npomarede » Sun Dec 24, 2017 2:25 pm

Hi

I'm looking for some suggestions of musics I could use for a small STE intro.
Due to some limitation in this intro, I can't use any MFP timer, only YM sound every VBL, but DMA samples are possible.

Any suggestion on some recent musics I could consider (maybe some releases from latest Outline or Sillyventure parties) ?
The music would need to be rather "fast-paced"

Nicolas

If you're looking for something never heard on the ST before what about looking at the Spectrum 128, or Amstrad for YM compatible music?

Yes, maybe, although I think a music using the extra STE dma sounds channel would be nice (also, I don't know Spectrum/Amstrad composers that much)
charles wrote:can u use timer a ?

Nope, no timer at all (due to blitter running in HOG mode, MFP timers won't work)

when the STE is finish playing a sampling don't it trigger an interrupt?
could you just make the sampling buffer a size that fit the timing?
i was thinking about the mono (int15) interrupt.

The STE will raise an interrupt after playing a sample, but you can mask the interrupt so that it doesn't trigger an exception.
But I don't want to write my own music, I'm looking for some musics I could use from recent demo parties for example.

i can't help you with music, not good enough
the reason why i asked is that i have been toying with the idea.
after i add dma drums to my program, it took away the timerA that i use in my for score playing, so i though about making the buffer so small that they got trigger in the speed of my score player. ((sample speed div 50hz) div 6)) it should make the music player run 300hz.
in Endduro Racer i am also running the blitter in hog mode i think(Is it not the hog mode $c0,$ffff8a3c.w)
so when i read your thread i got a little nervous because i have not add my own player into Enduro yet, but i hope not the hog mode cause me to many problems.

Just wondering... One of the new things on STE was DMA-sound... If I think on STE demo, I don't think on YM-Sound...

It's like using a VGA card to make text mode demo. Like driving a car, pulled by horses.

Not necessarily, DMA sound requires a lot of RAM if you want to play a music that last several minutes. But mixing YM sound with some DMA sound (drum, snare, ...) can give some really good results and will add an extra dimension to usual YM sound.

Modfiles are also small, some sound really good, and they are digital sound. Anyhow, mixing both would be an interesting experience.

don't think he can do anything because he says his timers are all bogged down

npomarede: You need a tune but you prefer to use an existing one, that's it?

I doubt any existing compo tunes uses plain YM along DMA samples, as this is a restrictions for demos.
STE YM compos tunes usually involve YM soft-FX along DMA samples.

Yes, I need a tune for a small intro. It's not that I want to re-use an existing one, but I thought it would be faster to do so instead of having someone compose a new one.
But it's true that compo musics often use more cpu/timer for improved fx and I can't use them (I have very few cpu left per VBL, so I have the same limitations as a demo running in overscan, I can only call the music every VBL at 50 Hz and can't use timers)
If you feel like submitting a tune, don't hesitate :)
