Nova eGPU

Postby Gaiyan » Sun Mar 17, 2019 1:37 pm

So eGPU is just another name to a phenomenon pioneered by Atarians decades ago in the form of Nova. I always thought it was cumbersome without a proper case. I had a moment of inspiration and came up with a design based on this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2974854.

I shortened it and modified the base and of course added the logo. Here are shots of 3D models and prototype prints that work absolutely perfectly. Once it's ready, I'll upload to Thingiverse.

That looks impressive, dear mate. Congratulations
P.S. Have you considered an alternative "Atarized" ?, more similar to the case of an external disk drive Atari, with oblique grid, classic Atari logo with Fuji, etc.
ST/fm/e, STacy, Mega ST/e, TT, Falcon, C-Lab MKX... and more music tools.

Thanks! Yes, so many ideas but so much ADHD.

The Case is for ATI MACH cards only?

ET4000 cards build longer as the ATI ones ...

What the price for one?

Should fit any ISA spec card. Not selling any. I'll release the STLs on Thingiverse when I have confirmed it to be ok. I have a ET4000 which I will test as well.

I am swamped with stuff so this is a hurried release. I will not support or change or test. Feel free to remix it further.

I have a 3D printer I could probably print them up, but don't have cards to test to make sure they fit correctly. 100 bucks for a box is ridiculous, the plastic to print things is really cheap. Granted the time to print is a factor. I'll try to check out the time to print.

Any particular colors / material? I have been printing in glow in the dark plastic ha. I actually kind of like the plastic itself, it's nice, but then all Hatchbox brand has been pretty sweet.

Hmm, my idea would be to design one that sits on top of the TT/Mega STe, and works like a monitor stand, so you don't have a box just sitting there behind the computer. Though I guess you'd still h ave the VGA cable coming out the side of the box and into the screen. Also would depend on how big the base of your monitor is, for whether or not it'd fit right. The other option would be a vesa mountable case so it'd just sit on the back of your monitor, with the ribbon cables sticking out. Might even look kind of cool.

So I've been printing this, and it's almost done, but I need to remember to NOT print things like this upward, because then the supports for it are bigger than the actual print.
Also, is it intended to print the two Nova logo things twice, for each side? Kind of looks that way.

Hmm, in the original post, Nova is only on one of the sides and the letters seem to be filled? Your print looks pretty good though!

Ha, only one of them, was part way through the print when I was like "I really shouldn't have done that..." but that side does look amazing. sometimes when they are flat it leaves a slight texture to them.

Yeah, the model doesn't have the other side with just bars. But it builds out pretty sturdy.
