SF314 models

Postby tcat » Mon Aug 27, 2018 7:15 pm

Hi,

Can anyone please advice on external SF314 floppy models? By looking at some pictures on the web, I can only recongnise two variants, with [1] `small eject button' , and [2] `large eject button'.

My `STfm' machine has an internal drive capable of standard 720K up to 820K format (i.e. 10 sectors on 82 tracks, used by gamers) , if I wanted external floppy for that machine, capable of format 820K, what variant you would recommend, [1],[2]?

I just need a second drive [b], reading/writing/formatting the same as my internal [a] drive.

Many thanks in advance.
Tomas

From my experience, both versions work the same as the internal FD. It would buyer preference of button size to match the ST FD button

There are a few variations of this drive. Some have standard Shugart floppy connection interfaces internally and some have custom connections. I've seen small button ones with either and large button (my first drive) which has the non-standard connector. They all have an interface board which holds the connectors at the back. The versions with the custom connectors on the drive have more electronics on the interface board than the ones with Shugart compatible drives.

From my experience, none of the drives are the same as the internal ones in STF(M) machines.

Hi,
Thank you, encouradged by your replies, here is the next one. I learnt that drives are rubber belt driven. Do these belts vary from model to model? Same belt used for internal drives, and external models. Do they differ for ones with short and wide eject buttons?
Many thanks
Tomas

I have never seen a belt-driven DS floppy... there were 3 types of SF-314, but much more internal disk drive types. The oldest model had a square eject button, like most PC floppies have, the further model had a "slanted" (rhombus) type wide eject button (like in early STf), and the last one had a small slanted type eject button (like in STe). Early SF-354 models used a belt driven SS (360 kB) floppy drive.
