Falcon Video extension

Postby Saturnin51 » Tue Feb 27, 2018 9:42 am

Hi,

I bought 2 DB19 (male and female) in order to make a video extension and connect the VGA 3-IN-1 over the Falcon and not behind.

I wired the 19 pins to obtain a direct link. But it does not work.

Could someone do me schema wiring please ? Thank you for your help.

Do you refer to something like this: http://info-coach.fr/atari/documents/myFAQ.php Section Falcon video?

No, I want just an extension for the Falcon video port. I bought the VGA 3-IN-1 device on this forum. It is about 5 cm long and I just want to deport the video port in order to connect this device not behind the Falcon but above.

Then you must have wired it incorrectly. One of the connectors is upside-down maybe? Or mirrored?

I'll try to wire again the connectors. It is not difficult to identify the pins with their numbers on the connector. So I don't understand why the extension doesn't run.
Must the ground be soldered on the carcass of the two connectors ?

Could you post a picture of your extension cable?

I meant post a picture of the non-working extension cable, maybe we can figure out the problem from that.

This is caused by interference. How long is the extension? What kind of wires did you use?

The extension is 30 cm long and I use a Peritel cable (20 wires + ground).

the extension

It’s interference.
You need to ground the shielding with the chassis of each DB19. But I don’t think that peritel cable are adequate for vga signal which are more prone to interferences.

No change. I try to put aluminium paper around grounded. No change.

I have a VGA cable and an another with 10 wires and shielding.

Could it be possible to imagine a connecting schema with 15 or 10 wires ?

You'll probably need to use 75 ohm coax for the R/G/B signals. A VGA cable is a good choice, because it contains three 75 ohm mini-coax cables inside the outer shield.

The shield of each coax line needs to be connected to its corresponding ground connection at both ends. Red to red ground, etc. Don't connect the different colour grounds together. Pinout is here: http://old.pinouts.ru/Video/atari_falco ... nout.shtml

The other ground connections should be run on separate wires, not joined with the red/green/blue grounds. The coax lines need to go as close as possible to the plugs at both ends. For every cm of cable you have that isn't coax, the picture quality gets worse. Just wrapping with aluminium foil won't help at all, because it's the characteristic impedance that matters - not the shielding.

According to that site, there is an error in the Falcon's owner manual about the pinout. I would imagine that site has the accurate pinout.
