Just wanted to say a big thanks to Exxos for selling me the bits I needed to turn a DOA German 1040STFM into an English 4160STFM with blitter, and to everyone involved in this forum for the vast amount of written information I've relied on to reach this point.
The soldering job on the blitter shouldn't even work... and yet it does
Cheers! The blitter pads were corroded. I had to tin what was left of them them fairly thickly - so it's sitting up too high to begin with - and then use solder bridges to overcome the ones in worst condition.
The RAM was in these J-leaded packages... I had to destroy them to get them off. And those resistor packs by the ROM sockets mean the only way to situate the SIMM is diagonally. I think I have the worst possible ST variant.
I know what you mean about those SMT RAM's. I was saying to someone couple days ago I practically had the board on fire and those SMT rams wouldn't come off! Its why I do the PLCC RAM kit, but cant be used with the SMT boards. So the way you did it is the only real option for that board.
