Power Drive 900 power supply problem

Postby vinniethedweeb » Fri Aug 28, 2015 9:29 am

I have a Power Drive 900 which has become separated from its power supply unit. I would love to get this working again. Finding an old PSU might be impossible. I could get a new one but there are a few rather basic questions I am struggling with.
First is how much power does it need? The units says ‘Power in: +5V 2A, + 12V 2.5A ( I have attached a pic). Does this mean it needs a 5V PSU or a 12V one or either?
Second, assuming I find an appropriate PSU I would need an adaptor of some kind to allow a single pin type of connector modern PSUs have to the 6 pin connector on my drive. I may have known what this was called once but have long forgotten. I think the above should show the meager limits of my knowledge so any help is much appreciated!

an old PC power supply will work, or you can buy a 'power brick' like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/VERY100-Docking ... 5v+12v+psu
(note, this one has 2A output, which should be fine, but a 5A one may be better)

the connector on the hard drive box is called a '5 pin DIN'

http://www.amazon.co.uk/5-Pin-5-Pole-Au ... din+solder

it's as 'easy' as snipping the connector of the PSU in the top link, using a multimeter to identify the 5v and 12v, then solder up one of the DIN connectors, and you'll be ready to go :)

you may need to take the drive box apart to work out which pins are which, photos will help if your not sure, but I would expect 12v to go to the drive itself and 5v to go to the board.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Also explains what the 5V/12V thing is about. I am not a dab hand at electronics or soldering so might not go that route but have a much better idea what I need to look for. Anyone else who may have links to other PSU options please feel free to add. If you keep the words ‘idiot proof’ in mind you will probably get where I am coming from!

For information - because I have one of these - the original power supply was just an Amiga A500 power supply with the original plug cut off and a 5-pin Din plug wired onto the end instead.

Hope that helps.

That looks like it would be a neat idea :) I actually have 2 Atari ST (external) floppy drives without a PSU for them, so when I get chance I will get a couple of those and put a larger DIN on it. Probably would be useful to document it for other people as this "problem" seems to crop up now and then :)

This sounds a possibility. I think I may have an old Amiga PSU buried somewhere. If you do get around to documenting your efforts I will read with interest.
