520 STFM Rev 1.1 - C103414-001 Memory upgrade.

Postby Atarist8te74 » Tue Sep 18, 2012 11:31 am

I finally got around to pulling out an old dead stfm that has been boxed up for years.

So far I have:

Swapped out the dead psu with a working one
Cleaned up the disk drive
Repaired the disk drive frontplate (mounting tab was broken off)
Gave everything a good dusting out

Now I have run into a problem or two, I picked up an old xtra ram deluxe a while back but I cannot use it because the mmu is surface mounted. So instead of that idea I would like to upgrade the memory to 1meg, the memory sits under the psu, is surfaced mounted and the board is a rev 1.1 C103414-001, detailed here:

wiki/index.php?title=File:ST_Motherboard_C103414-001_Rev_1_1_exxos.jpg

So my brain (if working lol) means I need some 256k 4bit drams? can you get sockets for these?
also there are resistors sitting near the empty spaces already so they wont need doing.

Thanx :)

I know people have hardware hacked more memory onto those SMT boards, but it maybe just easier and cheaper to get a new STFM board and go with a easier solution to upgrade.

I dont want to get rid of the board or have to buy another one tbh!

Hmmm im wondering if its possible to hack in a 256k 30pin simm that I have lying about?

you would need 2 30pin simms or a 72pin simm.

I have an Atari STFM like you and in its days I also bought the Marped Xtra ram, If you can solder follow the instructions in this manual http://dev-docs.atariforge.org/files/Xt ... Manual.pdf
It works, did this when I was 15 :-D still works with 2.5mb ram

Ahh yes didnt think of that possible route! I have the original paper manual for the expansion and im pretty confident with my soldering skills.

There are several ram expansion options available, and you should find some in the net, if you look for them.
( like I had mine put on sale for the past few years and is still there... )
However, I would recommend that you get new kits (like the one from exxos).
This is because of the age of the older kits, like mine will be nearing 20 years old, not knowing if the solder or wires will hold any longer.
Just my 2 cents.

:( this old stfm will not support Exxos ram board, ram is surface mounted and is arranged different.

So im thinking would it be possible to take an old 30pin simm with 256k of ram on it, hopefully by matching the correct number of chips and their speed etc. Then getting those chips off and then onto the stfm. As stated earlier the resistor packs are in place so the only job is getting the chips soldered into the spaces.

I so badly want a hot re-work station but havent got the room to leave it setup properly :(

The 30pin design was just taken from the STE diagrams and hard wired to the STFM.

The 72pin simm aka "4mb glue job" was hard wired to such a STFM. Though I never developed any kits to fit the SMT boards as they seemed less common. with so many revisions of the board and versions, it would be impossible to do kits for them all. It can be done with the instructions I posted (by alison) just takes a bit of time to do all the wiring but can be done. I would suggest the 72pin route as it would be easier to wire in IMHO.

Though if you have the marpet one anyway, might be easier to just hard wire the MMU cables to the resistors on board instead, and just forget the adapter, as if you are thinking of hard wiring it, the ram kit half goes on the shifter anyway, pcb and ram modules already there on the upgrade board, so you really only got the RAS/CAS & related lines on the resistor bank, just cut the ribbon cable socket off and wire to the resistors direct.....

Sounds like a good plan!

My only little nag is I would want a picture of something like this fitted to a motherboard as close to mine as possible. I have found an old thread on here about an st in a rackmount case but not enougth of the board is shown.

Seems nit picky but im slightly un-confident with getting the right pinouts on the mmu ribbon. I can do it I just need to map them out before going ahead.

Also the xtra ram manual lists resistors under their U codes, I assume these are common accross all boards?

I would get the 30pin simm pinout, then just test with a meter which pins go to which MMU wire, u dont want the resistors as you can use the ones already on the ST motherboard. I would then just put a sticker on each wire so you know where you are, The STE diagram will tally the simm pintouts to the ST motherboard if there is any confustion.

Lots of people have hi-jacked the resistors from the MMU anyway, its not uncommon.

Its what I did there, though most of the wiring will already be done for you on the shifter adapter. So it shouldn't be much of a job to hook up the remaining cables.
