STE with IDE drive won't auto-boot

i have been lucky enough to get an STE with the IDE hard drive inside and it works great ;0)

only problem is i can't get the drive to auto-boot to desktop

each time i switch it on it just goes to normal ste desktop

i have set it up using HD driver version 7 and version 8.18 and still no luck

the drive works fine if i auto boot with a floppy disk in the drive with the same settings but obvioulsy i don't want to use that method

any idea what i need to do?

am just wondering if it's a bit more complicated as most Atari software is geared towards scsi and acsi

What TOS version do you use? ST(E)s without TOS 2.x simply cannot autoboot from IDE devices as they don't know about them.

i didn't know that

mine has tos 1.62

so will try with tos 2.06 then

You will most likely need a boot floppy disk with some sort of ide driver autobooting from the floppy, that will enable your hardware recognize your HD

That was a looong time ago, but I think my Supra adapter with SyQuest was able to boot using tos 1.02.
Of course later I used a floppy loaded tos 1.04 as it have more fixes.

Nah, SyQuest is a SCSI.
But the mechanism of Tos looking for a drive boot sector ought to be the same.
I don't think it has codes specifically for IDE nor SCSI, as it is probably looking for a ASCI device.

It is not the same. The IDE interface uses hardware addresses which were entirely unknown before their introduction. So any TOS before this definition cannot simply know about a standard that wasn't in existance then.
