Which CF->IDE adapter?

Postby EvilFranky » Wed Aug 03, 2011 9:02 am

Hi guys,

Looking to replace the aging IDE hard drive in my Falcon with a CF card.

Been looking on eBay and there are literally 100's of these 2.5 IDE to CF adapters for sale.

Can anyone recommend a decent one? Are they all the same or are there certain things to look for?

Any help would be great!

Yup they are all the same in terms of signal wiring. There is no logic on the board as CF is ubiquitously compatible with IDE.

Only difference will be the IDE connector:
44 pin (2.5" laptop style hard disk connector)
40 pin (3.5" Desktop style hard disk connector)

The 40 pin variety will have a separate connector for the +5 pull-up whereas the 44 pin expects the +5 through the flat cable.

The IDE connector in the Falcon is 44 pin. I bought one for about £3 and it works a treat in my machine.

Hi,

Apparently You have to use a later version of HDDriver than is compatible with Cubase Audio to use the CF card.

I'll bear that in mind.

What about CF cards themselves? Any particular type or make that I should look for?

The only version of HDDRIVER that works with Cubase Audio is v7.93 and I cannot get that to work with CF cards, but v8.23 works fine with CF but not Cubase. If anyone knows how to get CF cards working with v7.93, I would love to know.

Get one that has jumper for master & slave.
It helps when you need to expand to 2 IDE devices.

As always, I love to help but I do not have v7.93.

Ordered a couple of 99p adapters from eBay that will come from Hong Kong in about 6 months

Don't think these have jumpers for master/slave, but not bothered at 99p as they are easily replaced.

I bought two different types of passive adapter. Using the same card (SanDisk 1GB), one works with HDDriver (8.23) on the Falcon the other doesn't.

Doesn't work (notice the jumper is on the side of the connector.
Image

Works (notice the jumper is at the top of the connector.)

Don't ask me why or how as these things are supposed to be 100% passive but hey.

Odd - the adaptor I currently have in my Falcon is exactly the same as the top one in your post, Alex.

Maybe that specific adaptor has a problem with one or more lines? As you say, they are both passive adaptors so most likely a fault rather than a flaw.

Damn it. I've bought 2 with the jumper on the side...

Wonder why they don't work... :?:

Then Dal to the rescue! Well I have 2 to try so hopefully at least 1 will work...can't really complain at 99p.

I'll double check tonight to make sure that I haven't got them the wrong way around.

I should point out that both adapters work fine in an Amiga so one is not faulty.

I have a 2GB SANDISK Ultra 3 in mine. I think most people are using Sandisks or maybe Kingston CF's. I have an 'unbranded' one here that's 4GB and it won't play nice at all.

With a SanDIsk 1 Gb and running v8.13 HDriver. Works like a
dream. Have btw 2 extra sets lying around brand new still
packed in plastic...

Keep away from unbranded CF... I have one that don't work ( was a thread somewhere here).
Stick to SanDISK.

I have a extreMEmory 2Gb card (strange brand) but that works okay.
And a Transcend also works for me (128Mb) and then the 3 x 1 Gb one's (all Sandisk).
In my Falcon I have an Kingston running.

I have a Sandisk Ultra 2 4GB CF card in my Falcy which seems to do the job, it also works in CT60 mode, where a previous Kingston card didn't.

This seems to be fine as long as I don't overclock too much in CT60 mode. It's sweet and stable under 70 MHz but I start to get random unforced crashes thereafter, with craptastic failures if you deign to go higher with the CTCM. Certainly I'm not getting the 90 MHz plus that I could with the old (and now dead) IDE drive

It would be interesting to hear any experiences or recommendations for those of us combining CF Cards with the CT60 and CT63.

CiH - That 's a worry actually. My Falcon will also be kitted out with a CT60 and hopefully a CTCM at a later date.

But saying that Nature demo'd their SuperVidel card on a 90Mhz Falcon that also had a CF as it's HD...

I would think the ultra3 will be fast enough. My unbranded CF failed to read/write when I clocked my Falc to 50Mhz with a Phantom installed. The Ultra3 has been rock solid. I'll report back once I've done some tests with the CT60+CTCM.

Hmmm, Ultra 3 sounds interesting. 8)

Look forward to hearing more when you report back Dal.

I run my CT63/CTPCI with ATI R7000 Boot v 2,0 at 103 MHz for the past 9 months (until my ATI 7000 made in china died).
It has a HDD (master) and a CF (slave).

With Boot 2.01, I went down to 90MHz but still no luck with the ATI R7500 ( a "new" replacement card) but the ATI R7000 seems to work (90MHz & 103 MHz).
