power computing external floppy drive info needed..

Postby MRAtari » Tue Aug 04, 2009 8:56 pm

i have recently aquired one of the above drives BUT it has the external power supply missing

it's one of those phone charger type looking ones

anyway i was wondering if anyone has one of these drives and could tell me what the voltage is etc

also there are 2 switches on the rear marked A 0 B and 1 X 0

any ideas what these are for? i'm guessing A or B drive and on/off? :?:

thanks

Take the thing apart and trace back. Easiest way.

The power is either going to be rectified externally or internally. Likely there will be just a 7805 inside the thing and a couple of caps.
If I don't answer or appear to have forgotton then email again, I'm scatty! :)

found out it's a 5V psu!

can't work out the 2 switches though, if you move them around the ST hates it

need someone who has one of these drives to find out how they use it, if i get a chance i'll take a pic...

they are too allow for different st versions
as the external floppy port and internal wiring is slightly different

you need to set the switches to A,0 im sure

for ste it would be b,1 try something that uses 2 disks
place one in the bootable drive a and one in drive b

see if it works
also try a bootable one in drive b it should also boot
if you place the disk 2 in drive a it will use it in reverse

and try a disk copy a,b using fast copy

have tried the switches in those positions and nothing

it worked once and the drive just groaned like it didn't have enough power

checked the PSU, defo 5v and 5v at the drive too

drive is ok as it works fine in the ST

tried it on 2 ST's

this drive looks far too complicated compared to other external floppy drives i've seen :x

Is it an 5.25 inch or a 3.5 inch ?? My guess it's an 5.25 seeing to options you discribe.
With the 5.25 there are different models around with serveral switches on the back.
I have one with 40 / 80 tracks (switch 3) , and also the D0 D1 (switch 1 and 2).
I never really used it but it might suggest that is for either density HD/DD/SD or
a kind of sided select like SS or DS.
Would have tested it for you but it seems my drives isn't working at the time :(

Hi i have exactly the same external drive for the atari st and also without a psu. I can truly tell you what the switches do on the back of the drive!

position
I is drive on
O is drive off
X is on/boot from drive B

A is write protect
O is normal use

Please can you confirm what voltage and polarity is for an external psu as i have a multi voltage psu that i can change volts and polarity and i don't want to blow the drive.I bought this drive many years ago now on ebay and it came without a psu but the guy had put a sticker on the top explaining the different switch settings!!! Please get back to me on the correct volt/polarity as i am eager to use it now :)
