TT owners help please - question about keyboard plug

Postby Chandler » Mon Aug 13, 2007 3:00 pm

hello people

hopefully someone can help me with a question i have about a TT keyboard

i've got a TT keyboard which i've had for years and hopefully one day i'll get the rest of the computer!

basically what i want to know is, is this plug i have on the end of mine standard? it's basically a 5 pin midi style plug (or old style PC keyboard connection) is this the connection on the back/side of the TT?

or is it like the MEGA keyboard which looks like a phone line connection

here's a pic

TT, Mega STE, and Mega ST all have the same mini phone connector on them.

Looks like your TT keyboard has a custom connector on it.

Doubt they used it on a PC since the Atari keyboard controller is totally different than what is used in a PC.

Somebody must have put an Atari in a custom case and just used that connector instead of the standard Atari one.

You should be able to buy the little RJ12 connector used (many telephone use that connector to plug the ear/mouth piece into the phone).

Here is some info.

Just go to the dump, find a corded phone, and clip the plug off of it.

Well, maybe not the dump, but I'm sure you can find a free corded phone somewhere.

Unless a phone cord doesn't have enough wires in it, then you'll need a new connector and maybe a special crimping tool.

Any chance, your keyboard is from an Atari PC? Although, while resembling the Mega ST keyboard in design, I suppose the key layout was the AT/E, so it's pretty easy to tell the one from the other.

hi

i honestly don't know i picked it up ages ago and the guy said he used it with a TT, not having a TT i never thought anything of the plug

also can some one tell me - is the port on the right for the mouse? and the left i take it is for a joystick?

also i think one of the keys is dead what type of replacement switches does it use? are they the same as the original MEGA keyboard? or something different? the keys certainly feel lighter so i'd guess they're different...... :?:

I have an ST keyboard with the same five pin DIN connector for my towered Falcon.

If you take the cable that goes from the phone handset to its base it should have the correct plug on both ends already and you can just swap the cable over.

ok another problem i have with this keyboard is one key does not work...bugger!!

can anyone advise about changing defective pads? or what the procedure is for taking it apart?

i notice with this type of MEGA keyboard that the key switches cannot be individually un soldered... actually it looks like a throw away job! terribly made by Atari

advise please - anyone attempted to change dodgy keys on this thing?
