VISION 4.1a is out!

Postby JeanMars » Sun Jul 29, 2018 9:41 am

Not sure this message would interest many people but to celebrate 25 years of VISION, painting & image management application, I just released a new version!
With many nice improvements, among them:
- TT-RAM handling
- Dynamic memory allocations tracker
- Making use of NFJPEG Aranym feature (thanks to Zorro/zView for inspiration as zView JPEG decoding speed just blew my mind :-))
- File Logging feature
- New LDV: Black Hole (tribute to Stephen Hawking)
And much more cool stuff as detailled here: http://vision.atari.org/vhistoe.htm

Hoping some would still enjoy this!
Have fun,
Jean

be my guest :-)
Just translate VISION.RSC (VISIONB.RSC does not make sense nowdays) and VSMG.TXT. I'll be happy to include spanish as a supported language!

Cheers,

Thanks Jean! The efforts do not go unnoticed.
Been having connection problems at home. Tried to access vision.atari.org, getting a time out.
Checked against speedtest.net and a few others, seems the connection is ok ATM.
I'm cough cough using Win 7 and Opera.

Are we down?
Thanks again!

Hi,

works from here with Firefow and Edge. Should be a temporary issue, did you try again?

Sorta, have Edge on an Android phone, Opera on a tablet and this PC.
Getting same deal on each, as well as some other sites.

Think it lay within router settings as all devices, both wireless and hard wire go through it.
Now I'm sure it's the router. Switched the phone to data and the page came right up.

Sorry for the trouble-shooting post. And thanks!

Thank you very much for the update. 8) It's really cool that some old software is still improved by their enthusiastic programmers. That's a big present for the community. So I'm going to try it on my Milan040.
520 ST(M) (TOS 1.02), Falcon030 (16 MHz, 16 MB RAM, CF-Card, MiNT & MyAES), Milan040 (25 MHz, 48 MB RAM, EasyMiNT 1.90), Firebee, PowerMac G5 Late 2005 (2 x 2,3 GHz, Mac OS 10.5), iMac 4K Late 2015 (intel Core i7 4 x 3,3 GHz, Mac OS 10.11.6), IBM XT SFD (640 KB RAM, DR DOS 6.0), Compaq LTE 5300 (Pentium/133 MHz, DR-DOS 7.03), AT-PC (Cyrix 6x86L/200 MHz, Windows 98 SE/MS-DOS 6.22 & Windows 3.11)

There seems to be a minor issue with the (Vision v4.1a) help bubbles. When moving mouse up and down the Options menu, there's suddenly a help bubble for the printer icon that's below the menu. I.e. the bug is that bubble items get triggered while there's a menu open (i.e. for items below an opened menu).

Bubble also causes menu items below the bubble to be drawn wrong. I guess bubble drawing popup code doesn't know anything about open menus...
grab0004.png

[EDIT] Actually, the text tool has similar issue. I cannot quit the app if if File menu overlaps with the image window when Text tool is selected. Instead of invoking the Quit action on clicking the Quit item, I get text input dialog. There's something wonky with the menu mouse input handling (at least on single TOS, maybe it works better with multitasking AES).

This happened both with EmuTOS and TOS v3.06, so I would assume it to happen also with other TOS versions and on real device (I was testing this with Hatari).

Another minor issue is that Vision icons are broken if one starts Vision from med rez. It would be better if it would give error dialog.

Hi Eero,

actually GEM reports mouse moves even when browsing menus, trigging VISION's help bubbles. I will check if I can fix this in an easy way.
Note you can disable help bubbles from preferences if that annoys you too much.
For med-rez, I even didn't expect someone using this resolution nowadays :-) I will see if I can fix icon display easily , BTW I would prefer to have broken icons if VISION can still display images in this resolution than forbid this resolution. What do you think?

Have fun,
Jean

Without looking into your code, but doing a wind_update(BEG_UPDATE) should help before drawing any bubbles. The Screen Manager should have the screen locked while displaying menus, so your app will be blocked until the menu disappears.

Hi,

hum it's not that simple...
Even when calling wind_update(BEG/END), it does not help:
vsnap.png

The thing is that you open menu, then move mouse over an icon, a help bubble shows, causing a redraw issue over the menu.
If I can detect that the menu is open, I can avoid displaying the help bubble but I don't know how.

About the wrong display in 4 color modes:
vsnap1.png

Some icons from Image Browser window don't display properly; unfortunatly these icons are also available in mono and they should show here just like other icons, I don't understand why.

Any suggestion welcome, I open the bugs but I'm not putting a high priority on them.

Cheers,
Jean

My suggestion for the bubbles would be to place the icons completely below the pull-down-menus so they can't be triggered when the menu is open. If possible.

If I remember correctly the menu is under AES-control - you only notice that an item is selected, but I may be wrong.

Another idea: Maybe a call of wind_update(BEG_UPDATE) before displaying a bubble fails (returns 0) if the menu is open.

You get a BUBBLEGEM_REQUEST event in your event queue, then only you display the help.
When AES is displaying the menu item, you should not be getting any events until user makes an selection.
So you do not know when user is using the menu.
But then again, bubble help should not sent you any events, as the menu is active.

Just don't get it.

Hi,

@helmut:I'll check about wind_update return value to see if that could be used.
@wongck: VISION does not use BUBBLEGEM but has its own very old stuff to handle that. Sure this can be improved but the point is that I would prefer add some more useful stuff like PNG support rather than fixing this annoying but not that serious bug.

Have a nice day,
Jean

@Jean, ah Ok, great that you implement such a good help feature.
Sure, adding more features normally take priority over non-serious bug.
have fun working on it, enjoy!!
