Unknown extension (for me..)

Postby nagual » Fri Dec 15, 2017 12:47 am

Does anyone know what kind of extension is GRB ?

I found it on Atari Cd Library - CD 09 - a folder full with files with extension GRB.
According some cryptic info, files with GRB extension is full version of software, but I didn't understand is there any key to unlock this software, or just some program which "unlocked" files...

Cheers!

As i said , there's a lot of software, collecting from (I think) various sources, and then locked/compressed/other with some unknown program (for me, of course!)
And I have this CD, but still don't understand how to unlock or whatever this software:-)

If you posted more than one GRB file, one could look for patterns and whether this is possibly a very simple encryption that can be broken without knowledge of the algorithm or the key.

Ok, here's the 4 files of 25 with same extensions:-)
If you need all of them, I will put it on my Google drive:-)

Cheers!

After performing some cryptoanalysis on the files, I was able to deduce the encryption algorithm that was used. Fortunately, this algorithm is prone to an attack that allows the recovery of the decrypted data without knowledge of the key. Find attached a decrypted file as proof. I think it's OK to post this here, since in the meantime Boxkite has been released as freeware.

Which applications other than those you posted are on your CD, BTW? Maybe something that was lost until now? Then I could recover it by decrypting the file...

Thank you for your work:-)

Here's the list of programs, seems like older versions , but, all are or freeware or abandoned, so I can't see any problem to post it here:-)

A lot of the programs -- I didn't check all of them -- also were on the Whiteline CDs Alpha to Kappa, unencrypted: http://deltalabs.biz/atari-whiteline-cd-alpha.htm

Yes, you're right..I must be blind, I checked some of apps, hope there's a same version as encrypted one:-)

Once again, thank you for your effort and time:-)

No worries. It was a fun little project to analyze and decrypt the files.

They all sound familiar. Just search for them in the UTD and you'll see a list of public domain disks and CDs which include these programs. PIAG should be Play It Again GEM, officially declared freeware by the author: http://www.dirk-hagedorn.de/?page_id=13
AtariUpToDate - Atari ST/TT/Falcon software database and version tracker: http://www.atariuptodate.de
