ftp.funet.fi/pub/atari mirrored

Postby joska » Wed May 17, 2017 4:31 pm

Hi,

The Atari-section of ftp.funet.fi used to be quite popular back in the day. It has been read-only for at least a decade now, I decided to mirror it just in case. http only, no ftp I'm afraid.

Seems like most of the old ftp-sites are offline now, so I guess it was about time.

That's awesome that you made this available Joska!
How large is that entire archive?

How would you recommend we download the entire thing without causing strain to your server?
(I tried a variety of Firefox extensions and "website suckers" but none of them seem to actually download all the files as they are).

As long a funet.fi is there, I suggest you use a suitable FTP program and get it from there. It's not that big, only 550mb or so...

One day they will have a disk crash or decide to close the FTP, I've personally spent quite some time using wayback archive to check on past atari sites and the like. Nothing is forever, especially on the net... So make sure you got backups of your stuff, and make sure that your efforts collecting is being spread. If something happens, you will still have it.

I've had friends quit Atari because their private collections/stuff was lost. Insurances only covers that much. And some things you just can't protect against. Fire, flooding, just that random disk crash, or failure due to age... Or even having the police confiscate your stuff just to prove a point, despite you being innocent in court. I've had friends who has had all of this happening to them.

You're quite right! Contrary to my assumption that it was gone it wasn't and I've now downloaded the entire Atari archive from ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/atari/
Didn't take long either. What took time was to press "skip" every time a file download gave a "permission denied" or other errors. But the vast majority of files is available for download.

You can never back up too much!
Are any of the other Atari archives still available? I just tried atari.archive.umich.edu, but it's apparently gone.

atari.archive.umich.edu is still there, but they have no FTP anymore, only HTTP and AFS.

Hmm, I think I'll try to mirror it and support ftp (because quite frankly getting some things onto the Atari's is just easier with ftp.)

Will post a link here when it's done.
Atari 8Bits: 800xl, 600xl, XEGS, 800, 130xe, 130xe (fully upgraded (soon!))
Atari STs: 1040STf (broken shifter), 1040STe, Mega STe, TT030, Falcon (CT60e, SuperVidel)

Cool work, thanks!
I started to set up mirrors of some of the music sites that contain Atari information.
Wasn't quite organized to handle it all, and ended up spilling into other directories.
So, starting over will be easier in the long run.
Have found some ancient HAM radio sites containing some DSP56K projects and sample ASSY code too.

Absolutely!
And with FTP downloading the entire sites is so much easier that through HTTP.

Great work Jo Even!

Would there be a smart way to combine the contents of all the available Atari related FTP sites so that we could make one "ultimate" file archive with all available files but without any duplicates?

I snagged funet and umich, just need to set up port forwarding. I can snag the others as well. Nice that storage is so cheap these days, though I may just recreate this on a properly hosted VM instead of my house. Stupid lack of access to higher speeds...

In particular RealLarry already has a lot a Atari FTPs mirrored. Among others: the old umich.edu archive, ftp.fi.muni.cz, ftp.funet.fi, ftp.lip6.fr, ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de (this one provided by me), etc.

Yes, and it's still growing 8)

ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de (this one provided by me)

Yes, thanks again for this. But I found out that I've skrewed up some things in the rsync tree by a bad mistake while you uploaded this stuff.
So would you be so kind and re-upload yours when your time allows it?

Hmm, but it shouldn't be slow as it's a 100/100 mbit connection... Yes, it's slower than a 1 gbit line but I wouldn't call 100 mbit slow :D
Can anyone else confirm this a slow connection?
