Atari ST essential software (The List)

Postby AtariSince1989 » Mon May 04, 2009 9:37 am

Last weekend I was talking about Atari ST with a friend. Sadly, he is too young and missed the Atari golden days :P Kind of I convinced him to install Steem and start using it, with the main idea of maybe one day getting his own Atari. But he is far scared, because he don't know anything at all about computers that are not modern PC or Mac.

From that talk I got an idea  What if we gather together here a list of Essential Software? Later we could put it on a decent document, or I even could create an area in my FTP server with it.
EDITED:
This list have a website: http://www.datavase.info/ redirectered to http://sites.google.com/site/stessential/

So, lets enumerate the software that we think is essential to have in a "new" ST for a standard user (if needed we could do same for TT). From system tools to text editors, file compressors, picture viewers, disks copiers, etc.

Thanks a lot  in advance to all of you that will participate in this gathering :megaphone:

I think a good way would be: name (type of software) - little description - if possible, link to get it

After getting a list, I will gather all and we could decide which ones are good, in case of too many options.

=========================================================================================================

The List of Essentials so far ( * - means copyrighted software, so I'll not be able to put it on my FTP server :? ):
NOTE: Clarification here; it relates only to copyrighted software that is still been sold.

By the way if you could make it so that we can upload the software we have suggested to your FTP server, that would be helpful. I guess some grand epic title for the server goodies would be required too... :coffe:

Give him Devpac, GFA Basic and Degas Elite or Neochrome, that should keep him busy long enough.

Demos are also essential softwares, make sure you give him his share ;)

Atari ST essential software is highly dependent on what you want to do with your Atari.

I like to have:
NVDI: screen accelerator
Universal File selector III: File selector replacement
TeraDesk: desktop
E-Copy: copier/formatter
Kobold: file mover

Pure C: C compiler
Turbo Assembler & Bugaboo: assembler
Tempus II: Text editor

Degas Elite: drawing

Kobold is plain File Copier. Best and fastest!

E-Copy.. is kind of mix of Fast Copy and MSA.
I never felt E-copy should be the hit. MSA and FCopy and Kobold should do the trick!

Kobold wins my vote.
I even use it to format my floppies. Resultant floppy seems read/write faster then formated on tos/Wintel.

We got already 3 diffent file copiers:

    Fast Copy Pro III
    Kobold
    E-Copy

Could we decide for one?

Kobold is for copying files. E-copy (or F-copy) is for formatting floppies and copying floppies.

Taz - turns ST into a terminal, useful for talking to Linux, BBS, file-transfer etc. I use this a lot.

My personal choice would be the DC Utilities called DC Xtract 2.1 and the link is here:

http://www.umich.edu/~archive/atari/Dc/dcx220c.lzh

It can handle multiple archive formats (ARC,LZH,ZIP,ZOO) and is very fast and simple to use.

I'd forgotten that one existed. Always tend to unpack the stuff using WinRAR (for LZH) first before putting them onto the SD cards for the ST.
Having sold 99.9% of my 1300+ collection of originals, I'm taking a bit of a back seat on the forum. I'll still do the front-of-house admin tasks as and when they're required but, for now, I'm enjoying my Xbox 360 time too much :)

Atomik v3.5 if you have time to wait or Speed Packer 2 (or 3? can't remember) if you don't :D

Actually, I think there's a UPX build for the ST? Not sure how quick it is though...

And Diary 1.8 or maybe EdHak (haven't tried that one) for text editors. Having a text editor as a desk accessory is pretty handy when you're coding without an IDE (e.g. Sozobon C).

What is essential about Atomic (and co.)?

For me a depacker like Synergydepack is more essential as the packers.
