I have a folder on my ST HD that I can't delete

Postby mrnukem » Mon Sep 03, 2007 3:42 am

I recently installed an terminal program called CoNnect on my MegaST 2. I decided I wanted to delete it but it is set to read only. The problem is when I highlight the folder and go to File > Show Information the tabs to change the attributes is greyed out on both options so I can not change the read only attribute to read/Write.

I have tried on different versions of TOS and in MinT as well. No luck

How do I get this folder deleted?

Thank you

If you use a DOS partition table on your disk you should be able to mount it under windows/linux and be able to delete it, provided that you have a SCSI controller. Even if you have a GEMDOS table, a linux system may be able to mount the disk. Also, under MiNT, did you use a remove command on the directory. If so, which?
rm -rf <directory> should do the trick.
Good luck!

If you have Kobold prg try with it, I think it could do the job.

It's a Atari SH205 Megafile drive so it's not SCSI or PC mountable. I will try to find the Kobold program.

I was just trying to find a nice terminal program that supports ANSI. But I am kind of glad this issue happened as I enjoy problem solving and learning along the way.

It is an empty folder, or there are files inside the folder?

This is probably not the case but it sounds to me like you could have a hidden read-only file in there somewhere.

You may have gotten too deep into the folder path, so TOS is not able to kill the inmost folder anymore.
If you are using 8.3 filenames you might kill those empty folders with a tool as Correct.
Don't ask me where you might find it though.
There are chances PaulB is right as well.

MiNT also might do the trick when set to use long filenames on the drive concerned.

If you don't succeed there might be FAT issues, and I'd backup and repartition the drive to not lose any data.
Greetings, Jens

What are the exact names of the folders? Can you run a sector-editor to show the directory sectors and see what's in there?

Maybe to try with good old CHKDSK3 ?

If it can not fix it with menu option File, Analyze FAT you may try it with built in editor. Open sector where problematic directory is, and write $E5 on first byte (mark that it is deleted). Then go again to Analyse FAT, and it should find some lost clusters which may then remove. Of course this is not exactly for beginners...

Did you try to delete those folder (not the main folder)? If so, what happens, what error you get, when trying to delete them?

Use "Show Info" on those folders to see if you have a hidden file.

Thank you for all the tips. So far no luck it's still there.

Here is a link to the program giving me all the trouble
http://www.umich.edu/~archive/atari/Tel ... nglish.lzh

Another thing that has happened since I installed it. I have lost all serial port function. Before install I was able to use ST Ghost to transfer files and also was able to use the VT 52 Desktop accessory. Now neither of them work.

Thanks again for all the tips.

I just had a look at the archives and there's definitely no hidden files, read only files or files with strange/corrupted characters.

The only other thing I can think of is that you have a program running in the auto folder or an accessory that has flock'ed the contents of the folder you are trying to delete. That could also account for the loss of your serial port. Try renaming everything in your auto folder .prx and all accessories .acx. Then reboot to standard tos and see if you can delete it then.
