Moving MIST (etc) sub-forum into it's own main forum area

Postby Mug UK » Sat Aug 26, 2017 1:01 pm

As the MiST (and associated) sub-forums are generating a lot of traffic for AF, a suggestion that I've made to the other moderators is that it is promoted to a main forum, i.e. outside of Atari ST Professionals forum.

This will be happening on Monday 28th August. No threads/posts will be lost as the current posts will have a 'shadow link' to the new location.

If there any requests for sub-forums to be created within the new main forum, then these will be done afterwards. E.g. the cores available for MiST should probably have their own sub-forum, but this is just me looking at the general threads in there.

The alternative would be to have a main FPGA forum, with Mist, Suska, Raspberry Pi and such-like as sub-forums within. So you have until Monday evening (all being well) to discuss what kind of layout you would prefer :)

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

My idea would simply be:

Code: Select all

FGPA based clones
  MiST
  MiSTer

If a particular device supports multiple cores spanning several platforms and/or game consoles, one should expect such chat in there, else don't go there. ;)
Technically the FireBee can be anything, it's an open spec board, but alternate uses other than Atari are rare as hens teeth.

OK that's fine by me, but will need a bit of work from the moderators to move the various subjects around.

Does the above sub-list also include machines like the Raspberry Pi, or because that uses emulators, it shouldn't be included?

I you are using aranym or hatari, etc, there are sections for those already. That's how I see it anyway.

The first stage has been done and there is now a new main forum purely for FPGA-based clones.

Some more work will be required though to sort it out into a better arrangement via sub-forums. This will follow in due course, but with your input.

I've now moved (in my eyes) all of the MiST related posts into the new MiST sub-forum. The few posts for Suska have their own sub-forum, but did this not take off as much as MiST? If not, should I just merge it into the "everything else that's not MiST" sub-forum?

Do the MiST users want separate sub-forums for newbie questions, cores and such like - or do I just leave it as a single sub-forum for people to wade through?

Suska seems to be strictly Atari like hardware and Wolfgang has more fpga Atari's in the works, can you leave Suska as its own sub forum even though its low trafic? Actually its Wolfgang's Falcon clone I'm waiting on. ;)

No problem.

I was going to create a Raspberry Pi sub-forum, only because I finally set up Hatari on my own Pi 3 earlier today, but there were so few posts in there, that I didn't see the point :)

thanks for that! It's better now. I think it's better not to make too many sub-forums: it tends to confuse people to find the right section. Just a single one for MiST (and MiSTer), newbie questions and all the core into the same part is fine for me.

Why the subforums (MiST, Suska, ...) aren't visible from outside?

MiST and MiSTer are not really binary compatible .. they might as well be different boards (ergo MiST vs FPGA Arcade) .. Personally I wouldn't mind all the MiSTer traffic being in its own forum since a lot of whats going on with MiSTer isn't really applicable to the MiST itself (or even backwards compatible eg the 486 core on MiSTer, etc) .. hence its somewhat confusing for (actual) MiST users/owners/developers etc... (just my 2 cents)..

OK, new sub-forum for MiSTer created and the few obvious posts moved into their new home. If there's any other obvious ones that I've missed, then collate them into a single PM and send me them to work on.

Ah ..oops! Fixed now

I meant why one can't see each subforum as a separate entry with its own last post and date. :) Just curious, I'm not target audience anyway.

From the main forum, you can now see that there are four sub-forums. That's the same for any of the other main forums.

When you go into the FPGA-based clones, each sub-forum lists the most recent post within on the right-hand side of the screen.

If this isn't what you're describing, please upload another screenshot as it's been a long time since I did any proper forum moving around and I might have forgotten to select a parameter.

Can you add the url https://github.com/mist-devel/mist-board/wiki to the MiST sub forum description? Similar to the Suska entry.

True. But I'm wondering why it doesn't look like this:

Screenshot_20170829_211502.png

I.e. from the main page I would be able to tell whether there's a new post for MiST or Suska. It looks the FPGA root should be one level up -- therefore its subforums would be the main subforums (visible on the main page).

That's done. Is there a similar site / GitHub area for MiSTer that I can add to that sub-forum?

I've compared your screenshot against what I can see when I'm looking at the full list of forums, and I can't see any difference.

If the icons are red in colour, then new posts have been made. Blue means that there's no new posts.

On your screen shot there a part with Forum as title and FPGA as entry. The title should be FPGA based clones and it should contains the 4 subforums.

Ah yes, didn't spot that before. I will have to ask some advice on this, because if I change the format from 'forum' to 'category', things happen within the admin panel which I am not in control of.

I will do my best, if not ask around, to get this fixed without destroying the existing posts that I've just put into neat sub-forums!
