Discover new content thread (Demos, mods, homebrew)

Postby jayp76 » Fri Feb 01, 2019 8:28 pm

Hi,

my intention for this thread is to discover new content that is out there and working on the MiSTer. I grew up with Nintendo and Genesis, but i don't know what other platforms have in store. There are so many undiscovered gems. So everybody can contribute and make suggestions. Please follow the board rules and don't post links to illegal content.

Homebrew:
I'll start with the Limbo C64 Demo. I was stunned what the C64 is capable of. You can find this in "the C64 Scene Database". When launing the game use SID 8580 for Sound.

Mod:
Mario Kart Full Screen Mod is an IPS patch that removes the Info panel in single player mode, so you can see the whole race track.
you have to apply the patch yourself.
https://github.com/originalgrego/SuperM ... FullScreen

I am excited to hear suggestions from you.

Best regards
Jay

Here are the resources and source code to a Tempest clone for fpga called Vic Vector. For those who like to tinker.

Very interessing modification to "Goonies II" for the NES.
I love this game, but is a bit janky to play. Hopefully this changes the overall experience. Sounds promising.

- Text is a lot faster.
- Camera has been fixed, now more centered.
- Pressing the select button toggles between Hyper and Jump shoes if you have any of those.
- Start button goes to the map screen. Pausing has been removed.
- Better password screen with more information on controls and also way more intuitive controls (see screenshot).
- New map screen showing the location of some important items. The player is still left wondering what those are and how exactly to get there anyway, so it actually works like a loose guide. It could seem like it makes it too easy, but in the end that is definitely not the case.
- The "start/continue" screen has been redone with quick guide and plot setting.
- Cannot move the hand or the hammer when hitting in rooms. Just use the item and if there's something to appear, it will. I figured this made a better game design. Because if you don't know where to hit you'd just have to hit everywhere until you're lucky. There are no hints as to where to hit. So it was just boring. Even if you know where to hit it is just boring. I've made it quicker by doing this so the player can focus on the gameplay.
- Rearranged the health on the HUD.
- Only need to hit the lady once instead of five times.
- Better controls inside rooms. Should be a lot more natural:
A confirms
B cancels
Select changes the item list
D-pad moves the cursor as expected (all directions work)

Gameboy Bullethell Homewbrew:

Dangan GB

The game was designed to run on real hardware but works fine on most accurate emulators.

Some features:

6 unique bosses with multiple phases
no bullet flicker
no slowdown
no tearing
plenty of bullets

I am happy to report that the dump of the "Remute - Technoptimistic" Genesis Cartridge is working flawlessly on the MiSTer.
It is reported to also work on the MegaSG. The Cartridge demands timing accuracy. For e.g. it does not work with the Retron5.

Thanks so much for including Technoptimistic here! There is no ROM-release of the album, but we decided to give away the album-single 'Red Eyes' (including the full video!) as a ROM-file. Kind of 'demo version' to try before you buy the album. :) https://files.scene.org/get/demos/artists/remute/remute_redeyes.zip

Just wow,

a Super Mario Bros Port for the C64 was released. You see the visual differences to the original, but still looks beautiful on the C64 port. Luckily the controls feel as tight as on the NES. I could only run the .CRT file. The .dsk file does not load. As stated in the forum post i linked to, the port suffers from some slowdowns.

This mod looks and runs nicely. You have to manually set the core to Gameboy Color, but it's easier to rename the modded rom from .gb to .gbc. So no need to set the core.

Hi,

if found a very promising and amazing looking Shadow of the beast port for the Acorn Archimedes (A3000, A3010 etc.).

It seems there will be much more on screen by freeing some CPU cycles, not plotting parts of elements in the background, behind the ones appearing at the foreground.

Check it here:

These should keep you guys busy for the weekend

Mods

Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest retranslation (NES)
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1032/
It fixes the dialogue to make the game nore coherent, adds a world map, and even a save ability. I never finished this game so I'm temtped to try it with this.

E.T., fixed (Atari 2600)
http://www.neocomputer.org/projects/et/
This guy analyzed what made ET terrible and made relevant fixes to make it playable. This game is infamous for having been rushed out of the door, so it's interesting to see what it could have been with more polish. Pretty intrresting read!

ULA Plus conversions (Spectrum)
This is an enhanced chipset for the Spectrum that adds colors and a few abilities. Many games have been converted to take advantage from it, my favorite being Arkanoid. They work on the Speccy core:
http://abrimaal.pro-e.pl/zx/ulaplus.htm
For more info on ULA Plus see here:
https://sites.google.com/site/ulaplus/

Homebrew

Castlevania Spectral Interlude (Spectrum)
http://spectralinterlude.com
A homebrew original game based on Simon's Quest. Has nice music (need the Spectrum 2 mode for it) and seems quitr extensive... I didnt get very far with it yet but it's fun to see it ported to the Speccy.

Radastan's games (ZX Spectrum)
http://www.bytemaniacos.com/?s=radastan
Radastan is a prolific Spanish developer, who made a bunch of interesting games. The page above has descriptions in English.

Mojon Twin games (multi platform)
Saved the best for last, I love these guys. Not only they are very prolific with a bunch of quirky, irreverent, and sometimes NSFW games, but they have also released source code for several of their game engines if you'd like to implement your own games.
http://www.mojontwins.com
They also host their older games and games from others:
http://www.mojontwins.com/juegos_mojonos/
http://www.mojontwins.com/juegos-de-colegas/

Special mention, they made a game for the Computer Spiele Museum:

These Mojon Twins and Radastan games have a very distinct and idiosyncratic look.
I once tested Sir Ababol. It looks nice, but could not get the hang of it to keep playing.

Castlevania: Spectral Interlude is indeed very nice NES style Castlevania for the Spectrum.
Controls are fine (played it a bit on RetroPied RPi3B+).
Quite a load of text panels though. I guess this game needs you to take the time, to properly enjoy the story conveyed by these texts.

Hi!

Found a nice easter egg at the end of the Black Mirror episode 'Bandersnatch'. There's a QR code in it which directs to the link below:
https://www.tuckersoft.net/ealing20541/
Converted the audio to .tap and attached it with some screenshots.

Next exciting thing to do in the MiSTer, besides Demos, you can play back "VGM Files"on the the YM2612 SoundChip of the Genesis/Megadrive.

On https://project2612.org/index.php is a tutotrial how to rip your own VGM Files. You can also find a complete pack on archive org.

To play the VGM Files you have to convert them to Genesis rom file. This you can do with "VGMPlay 3.42" and also add pictures to each track.
I had good results so far.

if there is a VGM player for linux, then it will be possible to play files without conversion.

Seiken Densetsu 3 has finally been officially translated and released by Square Enix as part of the Collection of Mana for the Switch.

The SNES ROM has been extracted and is now available in the wild for anyone interested.
