WIP MiSTer Amiga 600

Postby mattsoft » Fri Jun 22, 2018 2:56 am

Some pics of my WIP MiSTer Amiga 600 conversion. Figured it would be a fitting case for an FPGA Amiga!

This is great. Any specific parts were needed?

Looks good! Do you use keyrah?
What's happened to your A600?

Hi all - I bought the case and keyboard separately from sellers on eBay and am using an A600-USB keyboard converter from Tynemouth Software. For mouse and joystick ports, instead of DB9, I've decided to use USB since USB mice and gamepads are easier to come by. I bought a couple of USB PCBs and wired them up. I'm using an unpowered USB hub for now, and was hoping to use the MiSTer USB hub board, but the stack is too tall for the 600 case so I am going to use a Zero4u powered USB hub designed for the Pi. It's tiny and I have room to mount it next to the DE-10. On the back left, there is a DC barrel jack for power in, an on/off switch, and a push-button switch connected to the OSD on the IO board -- this is important since the 600's keyboard doesn't have F11 or F12! I plan to extend the micro SD to the floppy drive slot for easy access to the card. I'm designing and printing all the 3D mounts myself -- lots of try and fail! :) All other 600 powers are filled in. I hope to have it done and buttoned up in a month! It's a nice size box that fits on my desk and looks like a regular old A600 until you turn it on. :) If anyone is interested in the 3D mount parts, I can send you the STL files to print, or could print you a copy (when I'm done).

Very nice!

Wow, was not aware that the Tynemouth Software converter existed.

Before I started my MiSTer CD32 I built a Raspberry Pi in a Commodore c64c case with c16 KB, so I was trying to figure out where you hid the Keyrah :)

The Tynemouth adapter is double-taped under the keyboard.

Let's see some pics of that MiSTer CD32! I like that idea!

Your A600 keyboard has 2 euro keys. If your USB converter generates unique codes for these empty keys, then you can use standard MiSTer feature to re-map the keys and assign them for F11 and F12

Huh, that's cool. I'll need to experiment.

What would be super cool is if the NUM_LOCK and SCROLL_LOCK LEDs could be used as DF* and HD activity lights like UAE. :) One can dream!

NumLock/ScrLock LEDs already have functions to display.
But you may connect A600 LEDs to MiSTer I/O LEDs, and you will get what you need.

Yeah, I'll get to that eventually. I learned that the START button on a USB gamepad also brings up the OSD so that is very useful!

As for the NUM/SCROLL LEDs, in UAE, they emulate the activity light of the floppy and hard drives independently and send them to those keyboard LEDs. I assume for the MiSTer/DE-10, the IO LED is any activity on the CF card?

It depends how you assign the joystick buttons.

in MInimig core I/O LEDs show: Power, HDD, FDD activity.

checked the price for that Amiga-USB converter.. Oh, common! $65 for single-chip small board - this is too crazy, guys!
Even Keyrah v2 costs half of that price with larger board and more connectors...

Yeah, I know, it's pricey for what it is. But it's very small and solved the problem for those of us not electronically inclined.

The A600 LED board (like the CD32s LED board) use a common ground for the LEDs and also contains the resistors. The Mister IO is switched on the ground, so you could directly connect up the power or activity LED, but not both simultaneously. For my CD32 I used some pc817 optocouplers to switch things up. In the case of the A600 I'd just recreate that little LED board because it's so simple (the CD32 LED board is much more elaborate and has volume control, double LEDs, reset and audio jack as well).

yeah, Sorgelig suggested reversing the LEDs. easy-cheesy and done. works like a champ now. :)

More progress...pics here: https://amigalove.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=636

Found a powered USB hub that fits (Zero4u) in this tiny case.

Getting the floppy drive slot plugged this weekend with room for microSD card mount.

Everything else is mounted using 3D prints...so...close!
