Question about Apple II core: GS compatible?

Postby seastalker » Wed Dec 13, 2017 9:53 pm

Two questions. Testing out a recently acquired Apple IIGS Woz edition. Newsdee once remarked he couldn't tell the difference between a Speccy and the Mist core.

1. Though I have both the core and now an Apple II, I don't have the experience beyond childhood memory. How does the Apple II core fair in terms of compatibility and accuracy to a real Apple II if you have the experience with both?

2. Exclusive GS software. Does the Apple II core support any? If not are the options only real hardware or PC emulation? I'm not married to the GS and has no nostalgia for the GS mouse nor keyboard like say the IIe keyboard. I'm thinking about selling if the Mist or Mister core makes the original hardware not needed beyond fandom. I seem to remember the Mist core only supported .nib files? Maybe that is a reason to keep my GS?

The Apple II core is not for the Apple II GS. It supports an Apple II+ with 128K memory and a Mockingboard soundcard (equivalent to an original IIe with the same soundcard) and yes it only supports .nib files. There is a small utility in the repository to convert .dsk to .nib.

What's missing to be a complete replacement is disk writes. It would be also nice to have a hard drive and better mockingboard support, but to be honest to just play games the core is more than good enough. Another thing that would be nice is support for Enhanced //e and multi language ROMs, but then again to play some games its not needed at all.

If it had disk writes I'd say the core is as good as an Apple II+ or unenhanced IIe. I still have my original IIe (pimped up with CF readers and PS2 keyboard) but the MiST/MiSTer are much more convenient to play. I'm still keeping my Apple though :)

Newsdee- always brilliantly summing up a question with a short and sweet answer!

I converted all that would to .nib last year (yay Choplifter!). Let's hope the core gets updated for disk writes. I think the GS already uses a PS2 port for keyboard so I may use an IBM model M there too. Probably will keep it. I'm looking into a CF Reader/USB solution since my 3.5 floppy drive seems buggered with disks getting stuck and not reading them. Know the best upgrades currently offered? I'd buy a new floppy drive if there was also some USB floppy drive that could be used on a PC to format and write software for all the old computers.

Happy to help :)

I can highly recommend the CFFA: http://dreher.net/?s=projects/CFforAppl ... I/main.php

But it's hard to get (maybe you can still get in the upcoming batch) and while it shows up on ebay from time to time, its more expensive there than directly from Mr. Dreher. As an alternative you can use ADT Pro, it offers various ways to connect to a PC (including via cassete port!): http://adtpro.com

In terms of games some of my old obscure favorites were Short Circuit, Millionware (quiz style game), Star Blazer, Rocky's Boots and Robot Oddisey.

Say, I can't find that DSK to NIB utility and I could really use it. I have only been able to find a handful of games in original NIB format. Most are DSK.

Can you point me to it?

Thanks

It's also located in the MiSTer Apple-II github.

For me, the freeware program CiderPress (http://a2ciderpress.com) was used to convert ALL file formats it was able into .nib format. These will be most compatible with emulators and the MIST core.

As for other upgrades, I did some homework. I don't know how much a Transwarp clone card will be needed. The CFFA3000 looks like the single best thing to get. I'm also starting to research the difference between the functionality of that vs the Apple2Pi:

There is a 4mb upgrade card that looks cool:

and they make a currently out of stock RGB adapter
https://gglabs.us/node/679

I've seen a VGA adapter but my original GS monitor is still going strong for now so I put the word in at least for a CFFA3000

The GS normally hasnt a PS2 Keyboard port....
Ports who look like this are serial ports on the GS for Modem and Printer
The GS has a 4-Pin-ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) Keyboard Port.

Thanks for the link on converter and the info on CiderPress. If your looking for a good SD card solution for your GS:

I have one for my Macintosh Plus and SE and it works well.

I stand corrected on the Ps 2 port- haven't unplugged the apple keyboard until now... Well, I may cook up some bacon to go with the egg on my face.
