ZX Spectrum 128K/Pentagon 1024K ULA+/TR-DOS/+D/MF128

Postby Sorgelig » Tue Jun 21, 2016 5:22 pm

I've decided to make a new topic since many things are already changed from original ZX core.

So, as I've announced earlier, ESXDOS has been removed in favor of native disk read/write.
The core is here: https://github.com/sorgelig/ZX_Spectrum-128K_MIST

Many changes in Read Me, so please read it before discuss.

+D disk is easy to make on PC if you don't have it: Just make empty file (filled with 0) with length of 819200 bytes and give extension IMG.

Tested +D with img/mgt and works like a charm ;) the next weekend I will test further.

A long time waiting for native disk support. Thanks for your great work in this core!

Edit: attachement is a blank disc, just rename the extension to .IMG

Sorry to remember this but the firmware needs a big change something to support the next gen mist, and that is on the todo list. Once again, Sorry.

Then change the FW. It's opensource. Everybody is welcome to implement his wishes.

These files aren't supported.
You need to make snapshot by yourself. If you are in the middle of play in some game, Then finish it in ESXDOS and then start new game on new core version.
Actually, +D snapshots named as SNA on disk as well. I don't know if they are compatible or not. May be there is a PC tool to transfer SNA to/from +D IMG disks.

There's also a Windows tool to convert 48k SNA to TAP, maybe it's useful for you:

I have a 120MB complete spectrum collection with 2953 games/apps/demos, almost all SNA and Z80 files. I think I'll stick to the ESXDOS version for that. ;)

Keeping collection in snapshot forms is pretty weird for fan, IMHO.

Weird or not, that was the most complete collection available for download that I found.

snapshots and z80 are not the best way of keeping your spectrum software, You lose out on loading screens, some multiloads dont work becasue they have stuff missing and some 128k games have the ay music missing - I had the same collection and I have slowly but surely replaced it with .taps and .trds they are much more complete and give and much better retro experiance.

If You guys share Your "complete spectrum" sets with nothing but taps and trds, I'll be more than happy to download. ;)

Just relax and play the games you really want to play. You won't be able to play EVERY spectrum game. If you will search specific game you want to play one by one, then you will create your own collection little by little.

As someone who never used a Spectrum before trying to get some things to load can be a bit confusing.. seems there is a wild and varied means to load (successfully that is) for example, I recently tried to get Atic Atac on a tap file to load, while it would load (show title screen etc) it would die the second it went to the first "room" .. black screen, after trying a few different ways, I was eventually able to get it to load (and actually play) but I had to use a very strict method to do so.. as a Speccy newbie .. is this a common occurrence in the spectrum world or am I just doing something horribly wrong..?

So far, this latest core has been fantastic, Sorgelig. Well done! I haven't had any issues loading anything so far. I've tried maybe 15 games, some known to be finicky, and it has handled them all.

New release
- OSD update to support more values for options. Thus more choices are available now.
- Scanlines option.

This release requires FW update to version 2016/06/26 or newer to work correctly!

Sorgelig, you have done an awesome work with the Spectrum core!

The new options, are really really awesome!

I love the Transtape 128 into the core. This allows to poke the games in an easy way. Many many thanks!

I love too the D+ and the possibility to save snapshots.

The F9 to pause the core is very useful too.

The scanlines with various intensity is perfect!

Many upgrades to a very very good core.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the ZX Spectrum.
Is it possible to make something similar for settings and files browsing as it is done in Speccy2010 ?

I don't have Speccy2010 hardware and didn't see how it's made there.
If you mean some extended OSD windows, then I don't want to mess with custom OSD. Core uses standard MiST OSD - and all important settings are there already. Custom OSD will requires additional virtual CPU. But anyone is welcome to participate in core development.
