Help me get started with SD HDD?

Postby Gryzor » Fri Aug 29, 2014 10:20 am

Hello!

I finally found some time to assemble and try my CosmosEx - yay!

...I quickly found out it doesn't work with my 520ST+. Jookie told me it is the early TOS version that's incompatible and, till this is fixed, I can only use the SD card and not the other advanced features. Pity, but I'm not sour, I'll wait.

So anyhow, I wanted some help on how to set up an SD to use as HDD. I mean, since I never owned a ST HDD and I'm not familiar with the workings, after I assign an ID what other steps must be followed?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Hi !
I'm not a top-end user but from my experience you need a hdd driver to use it. I run hddriver (9.02) but it's not free. I dont know if the others work with the CosmosEx (ICD certainly ?!).

Hello,

assign some ACSI ID to SD using the config tool (e.g. 0), then follow these steps:

Oh, there's a guide for that too. Damn me, too many beers last night methings...

Cool, twenty steps :D

Earlier on I tried assigning ID0 to it to see what I could do and then the config tool couldn't see the CosmosEx. I changed it to 2 (just randomly) and I think it worked, so I'm going through the guide after I post this.

Btw, how would one do it with a HD image (I have a few already from working with MiST)?

Thanks again - HuggyOne76, too :)

PS Dammit, I now have SD all around, some for the HxC, some for the MiST, now for CosmosEx... heh :D

So, launching the formatting utility gives me this after scanning:

1,0 JOOKIE CosmosEx 1

I'm mentioning this because it differs from the screenshot on the guide that clearly shows "SD".

...it worked first time, now it auto-boots from the HDD indeed!

Only problem was that the default partition data was set to 64 partitions of 16MB, so there's lots of clicking to fix things, but it works! :)

Thanks again!

T

PS My question about HD images remains - do I just write the HD image onto the SD?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Just edit the partitions differently - to have fewer partitions, but larger ones...

See this:

...and instead of image of ICD Pro use your HD image.

Oh yes, I know, that was not a problem, just a "damn I need to click on lots of stuff" moment :)

Ok, so as I thought if I just write my image it works out of the box. Cool!

Btw, is there an english version of ICDPro lying around? I only have German ones in my archives...

Just a quick notice about partitioning, installing hard disk driver without floppy:
You can do it with single SD card if use RAMdisk :D So, first need to create ramdisk, then copy hard disk initializing SW on it (ICD tools for instance), then you will not lose it after doing new partitition scheme.
Negative feedback has usually positive effect.

That's a great tip indeed!
