MiST - Starter Pack

Postby Newsdee » Thu Sep 25, 2014 5:09 pm

Whats new:
(v0.4: added ZX Spectrum core with a few homebrew games and demos in CSW format)

MiST starter pack
Put the contents of this file on a fresh SD card and you'll have everything to try many MiST cores:
http://newsdee.com/mist/sd_root_0.4.zip

The cores will default to 50Hz (PAL) except for SMS and C64 that default to 60Hz (NTSC). Delete the .CFG files to revert everything to PAL
To switch video modes you must go into the OSD (F12), saving the config afterwards. Using an old multi-sync monitor (usually CRTs) can help for this.

MSX core starter pack
Put this file into a special SD card formatted with FAT16. Includes a SCC-patched Knightmare rom to test.
(v0.5: added MultiMente file manager; run with 'mm' then enter)
(v0.4: updated core to fix SD write and added VGA config file)
http://newsdee.com/mist/msx_sd_card_0.5.zip

-- Developer notes / Makefile --
Zip file content is generated from latest SVN trunk by picking up the latest cores in each folder.
Here's a preliminary .bat file and rom files to set it up; extract this file into the /trunk/bin/ folder in the SVN to run it.
http://newsdee.com/mist/make_sd_root_0.3.zip
(v0.3: fixed to pickup latest cores by name (SVN checkout can set files to same timestamp)
(v0.2 : fixed to run without prompting)
(v0.1 : initial release)

-- Known Bugs / todo --
  • needs more cores, especially minimig
  • diagnostic roms folder isn't copied

Sounds like a good idea.

I would say good job, but I haven't had time to try your package out yet, but I'm kinda thinking that it's something that will help mist.

...now if there was a way to handle LCD scaling problems...

Great! It's encouraging to see these kinds of contributions.

When you "save" the state of a core the NTSC/PAL settings are usually also saved. So by copying e.g. c64.cnf from one sd card to another the PAL/NTSC state is also transferred. This would allow for a SD card that boots directly into NTSC for the cores that support this.

Yes! Copying the CFG files worked, so I've put the C64 and SMS to NTSC by default.
Hopefully this will help new users that do not have PAL TVs (the others can delete the files).

@Newsdee Thank you for the MSX Core Starter Pack. It was very helpful in getting my MSX core up and running.

I made a few minor additions to the Autoexec.bat file that you may want to add to your starter pack.

Changed the @echo off to set Echo=Off

Added mounting .dsk files.

echo Type this to mount a disk as drive b:
echo EP file.dsk b: to mount as drive b:\ or
echo EP file.dsk /b /r to mount and auto boot from the disk
echo

A suggestion of optimisation for the MSX core, to type less letters and gain a little time :
If you create those 2 files in the directory UTILS:

-R.bat
ROMLOAD.COM %1% /R

-D.bat
EP.COM %1% /B /R

Then you can only type :
R [ROMNAME.ROM] for loading and running roms
and
D [DISKNAME.DSK] for loading and running disks

And don't forget there's file names (and directories) auto-completion using TAB key which also avoids typing file names.

What would we need to have MultiMente FAT16 installed?
(any direct link? I found a Japanese page but apparently that's FAT12..)

Hi!

Here is my MultiMente configured to run .rom cartridges just pressing INTRO key on them :)

Regards.

PS: I had problems with a MM downloaded from the web, which didn't browse correctly the files in directories, but this version works good.

Updated, added multimente, R.BAT and D.BAT.

Didn't have a lot of time to try it so let me know if I can do anything to improve it.
it launches MM but it doesn't reset if I load a ROM with Enter (it does for kmare.bat for some reason, not sure why).

I can get MM to load disk (dsk) but I haven't had any luck loading roms (Carts).

Hi!

In MultiMente, you can edit the file "MMRET.DAT" and modify the command to mount rom and dsk files... the romload line doesn't have the /R to reset the machine. I don't remember why, but I have not configured this way.
Maybe this weekend I can find some time to make some tests.

If I remember correctly, I reset the machine with the OSD after mounting a .ROM image.

Regards.

Updated the file to fix the romloader (/R), and also added a bunch of homebrew games I've found today.
Check out Caverns of Titan, really fun Manic Miner clone!

Let me know if you know any good homebrew games we could include.

Updated general starter pack to add ZX Spectrum CSW files (homebrew from 2013 and a couple of demos).
