grodan and kvack kvack demo (TCB)

Postby atari_mark » Sat Nov 05, 2005 8:41 pm

Ok so we all know about the grodan and kvack kvack demo, it was by TCB but it was apparently based on an Amiga original. I have a DVD for my xbox full of demos for both Amiga and Atari and I wanted to see the Amiga original.

Question is.... what did TCB base their demo on? Who wrote the original Amiga demo????

Check this : http://www.sodan.dk/oldbits/techtech.html

And yes, the guy behind this screen is also the author of the well known "Sword of Sodan" and "Datastorm" on Amiga.

The music used by TCB in their screen is ripped from another Amiga classic (Snurkel scroller by Dejam/The Silents).

Thanks, I found that after I posted my question. I saw the Tech Tech demo many years ago when I owned an Amiga.

I found someone who wrote a copy of the Groden demo in direct-x. I have mailed him to see if I can get a copy.

I know that the spreadpoint screen by TCB has a cover of "Master and servant" by Depeche mode, but grodan and kvack kvack demo? I dunno (but I don't think so either).

Linky :-
DirectX version of the screen

Not checked, but think it contains a copy of the original MOD too, cos he suggests renaming it to supress music playback

Thanks NiceGuyUK, that is cool. I downloaded the original TechTech demo last night and watched it on an Amiga emulator, I was disappointed though as it was not as good as I had remembered. When the TechTech demo was originally made in 1987 it must have looked really good.

I love the TCB version of Groden & Kvack Kvack though.

I couldn't get that directx version to run properly... all i saw was a lot of one bitplane stuff swoosh around. Still, it made me remember what a bitch it was to do all those one bitplane stuff... Trust me when I say that I have done more fun things in my life.. ;)

Works ok for me. See the screen dump, it's a bit poor as the full colours have not been captured (I tried a couple of times as well).

Cool info,

I always wondered what happened to Green Tommy! There's an interesting story about how he got the "Green"-prefix... ;) Last time I had any contact at all with Tommy was at IRC years ago.

Marcer,

Are you in contact with Tompa (Headhunter/Lynx)?

Illegal, nope. I lost contact with him, nearly same day he left atari scene. :/

Hmm...maybe my memory is very selective about stuff! ;) *yeah right and pi is 3.141592653589793238...crap...I don't remember more of that either...*

That story features pretty delicate matters but lets just suffice to say that it involves sex (hmm...matter of definition) and alcohol. ;)

Cheers!

Re: grodan and kvack kvack demo (TCB)

Postby mlynn1974 » Sun May 22, 2011 12:23 am

Hi, I know this is an old topic but it's nice to see my old DirectX rewrite of The Grodan and Kvack Kvack demo get a mention on a thread with Tanis!

Link to implementation details:
http://www.lynn3686.com/techtech_inf.html
The tune is in the zip file, it is called ronken.mod

I know that it might not run on some new graphics cards, which leads me to the point that if I convert more demos to the PC I should make them able to run "in a window" in a hardware independent way.
Still got, still working: Atari 4Mb STe, 520STFM, 2.5Mb STF.
Hardware: Cumana CSA 354, Ultimate Ripper, Blitz Turbo, Synchro Express II (US and UK Versions).
