"We Were @" demo question

Postby leonard » Sun Aug 25, 2019 6:17 pm

Hi!

I was about to release a 2MiB version of "We Were @" demo. This version is on my disk for a while. But I had a new idea: I think I can do a 1MiB version, without music. I want to know if I should do it or not. From one side, I think it's bad idea, because the demo without music isn't the real demo. On another side, I think that people having just 1MiB STE could see all demo effects on their real hardware.

What do you think? Is that 1MiB version without music needed? ( so if you have 4MiB machine, you see the complete demo, if you have 2MiB, you see complete demo but with some floppy loading between each part, and if you have 1MiB machine, you see complete demo without music and floppy loading between parts)

I'd say, if it takes you "peanuts" to do the 1mb version, it could be an interesting option yes.

Otherwise, you could use that time to start coding of a new demo.

Surely anyone with actual interest in using the real hardware has already maxed the SIMMs in their STEs? ST is a whole different ballgame however.

yeah, so maybe even a 2MiB version is useless :(

I'd have to agree with Troed on this one. I still totally get it (I think) why you invested time in a 2MB version: the challenge. :-)
Everyone has 14MB of RAM in their Falcons nowadays. Still almost every demo released requires no more then 4MB, because that *used* to be the most common configuration and it makes it a little bit more challenging... less room for "cheating". ;-)

STE is easy to enhance to 4 MB, I think every owner of STE did that.

Do it and add a message at the beginning : "Please install 4MB for the real thing"

My STe are equipped with 2 megs only (but their caps are in massive pain anyway...).

I believe that an STe is so easy and cheap to expand to 4 Mby that the person who does not do so should not care much about the actuality in demos.
It would be another world if we talked about STf / fm.

Ok. Sounds like there indeed are a bunch of 2MB STEs - so at least that work was in order :) Also shows that not all effects were just animations from RAM ;)

Or also, you could put together a 1mb version with an YM rendition of the soundtrack. :D

Wow that's a greta idea :) If any musician is able to do that, I could do a 1MiB version one day with chip music!

Anyway some of you have 2MiB machine, and I already have 2MiB version on my local disk, so let's finalize and release it!

I love that idea, mainly to show how impressive the code is (any not cheating with lots of memory) :D
Might not be the easiest thing to do for the musician though since I believe you do sync to the music on some parts?
Don't believe everything that is true.

Hi,

You can download a new version supporting both 2MiB and 4MiB version! Just use the same download link in pouet.net page

Enjoy!
