For the fun of it, i made an animated GIF of this "video demo", "The Run" by Radical Systemz.

No need for Youtube!
(there's even no sound in the demo)

looks cool, have you cut any colors?

No, same original colors on ST.

By the way, funny to read about this : http://www.stformat.com/softhards/softhards-2773.html
The scrolling is flawless, and the attention to detail even goes so far as the brake lights coming on. Makes you wish there was a game out there with animation this smooth. Phew.

I bet this guy didn't knew about "precalc".

nice one DMA

A game like this is possible on an STe?

Now that would be awesome

So you guys don't know about "precalc" as well... as in precalculated. ;)

It's just images combined in an animation, weighting 329Kio, packed, on disk.

I guess you'll look differently at some demos now.

The French brought design to the table.

I recommend everyone checks out leonard's STNICC2000 demo (newly updated http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=1251) if they haven't already. While it's actually filling the vectors in realtime unlike the animation in the OP, it still has all of the shapes and maths precalculated. Something like "The Run" would never be possible on ST/E in realtime. Unless of course you were okay with playing it at 1fps :D

EDIT: I could be slightly wrong about the tech behind STNICC2000 but that's what I remember from discussions many years ago. Also I think the vectors were precalculated on a PC and the resulting 2D screen coordinates simply stored in a file to be streamed off disk on STE.

Yeah I knew it was a precalc demo, but a realtime 3d game like that would be nice.

Nearest I would say to this is Burning Rubber on the Falcon .. on the ST Codemasters Hover Sprint or Robocop 3 come closest ... at the moment

Oups yes, i thought afterwards that it was why you two were mentioning the STe specifically. Sorry!
But then no i also think this would be impossible for so many polygons at this speed.

Another nice 3D racing game on ST is No Second Prize, enjoyable speed and gameplay.

Speed would be an issue, I do love No second prize though.

How did I forget about that! yep the stylised bikes help make the game visually interesting as well as easy to render. play lovely on the Falcon and well on the ST.. there is Vroom which manages the 3d environment. think the pitstop... tunnels... or Live and let die / Buggy Heat.. seems there is some potential for investigation ..

edit..

Precalc tracks streamed from harddrive... ? Prerendered objects.. just the game to worry about!

It would be fun to have a racing game based on Leonard technique + sprites, yes.
Even if it would require 1 disk per track. ;)

It could result in a game visually close to "Drome Racers" on GBA (where the 3D is actually realtime) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXohpVBBSfA

Gameplay itself would then be closer to MegaRace, no liberty on the turning angles, camera position always showing the entire road width : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDYEBgj5g3o
Actually MegaRace was more of a rail-shooter à la Novastorm, with no vertical movement, and adding acceleration/braking.
Although i'm not sure how Leonard engine could handle acceleration/braking, as it would mean speeding up and slowing down the animation.

Actually a Novastorm game based on Leonard technique could be more doable : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xjwI5J5Qy4
(aaah, music in Novastorm is still great)
Or maybe a mouse based rail-gun-shooter à la Virtua Cop, but visually close to Robocop 3D FPS part ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7qZ082BpLo

Yeah minimal fun about imagining games which will just never happen.
I guess i'll never completely recover from the STe experience...

I once started a thread about that: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21403 :)
And i was more into Silpheed (MEGA CD) because i like that style.

And yes Novastorm has awsewome music... too bad it never had a OST realease :(
