Another hicolor demo on ST : JAPAN beauties & troubles

Postby Cyg » Tue Jul 10, 2012 10:53 am

Hello,

I just released another demo using the hicolor technique I talked about few months ago in another thread ( http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=21148 )

It's called JAPAN beauties & troubles and you can download or just the video from here : http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=59411 (choose the DHS TV link rather than Youtube for the best video quality).
Image

100% hicolor demo on Atari ST/STE/MegaST - 4MB, released this weekend at Sommarhack
Each FX diplays between 200 and 850 colors at 1 vbl or sometimes 2 vbl (phong effect)
It could run with 1MB memory if I used a loader but it would have taken some few more seconds to wait between each screen.
Code : Cyg / BLaBla
Gfxs : Kenet / Brainstorm (credit logos), Nytrik / Cocoon (Main logo & textures), PandaFox / After the battle (end picture, girl with the fan)
Music : Dma-Sc / Sector One

Some technical details :

Japan logo - color changes on a tv effect : 500 colors
Nytrik & Pandafox logos : 550 colors
Girl with a fan - 2d deformation + texture fade + watermark effect : 550 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Earthquake on Hiroshima by night - crossfade + tv effect : 680 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Tsunami wave - 2d deformation + texture fade + watermark effect : 200 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Fukushima tsunami & nuclear accident - crossfade : 700 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Atomik explosion - blur zoom-fade : 450 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Cyg logo - glow effect : 320 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Lotus flower - phong effect : 340 colors / 2 vbl - 25 fps
Buddah - radial transformation + reflexion mapping : 700 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Kenet & DMA-SC logo : 500 colors
Gold dragon - bump effect + texture fade : 300 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Temple - particule effect : 850 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps
Tentacle monster - phong effect : 600 colors / 2 vbl - 25 fps
The end girl - blur effect : 700 colors / 1 vbl - 50 fps

If you have any question about it, feel free to ask !

Cyg / BLaBla

i follow the other thread and was very impressed by your high color mode, so it is good, to see that it got use for something.

Having seen this and enjoyed 'Street Art' first hand at the SV2011 party last year, the only question I've got is "What are you going to do next?"

@CiH : next prod is on the road with new and improved hicolor FX and some few technical improvements : overscan, could be STE only using some blitter enhancements, a better theme & artistic direction and quicker/nicer transitions between FX.

@Cyprian : the magic part is not in the Atari source code (that you can easily access) but in the data... The code is really basic and rather root : fully generated from a template inner loop and dynamicaly automodified to change some relative addresses or register indexes.

FYI, all the FX are only made of palette changes, no pixels were armed during the demo as they are not moving at all, they are just organizing the rasters which are doing all the job.
Pixels are lazy : mask & plans issues, slowness, size depending, a fullscreen is 32kB of data to update
Palettes/rasters are easy to manage (except the higher bit to go from 512 to 4096 colors), independant, fast, not size depending, number of colors is more pleasant to the eyes than pixels resolution, need less memory access to paint a fullscreen : 54 colors shared every 3 lines means 7KB of easy to access data to update vs 32KB of complex pixels

Best regards,
Cyg

Actually, re-reading the earlier thread and looking at the early examples shows a real difference in smoothness between the example STE and STFM screencaps, 4096 colours clearly being better than 512 in that situation. Would an STE-only demo be the next logical step?

EDIT, just spotted your post Cyg, answered that question nicely

Or additionally the ability not only to scale from ST > STe but to Falcon also? using full palette available there? I don't think I have seen a prod that does this apart from Starball which had some Falcon+ness

Edit: this is most certainly the most impressive colour cycle / palette rotation ever seen!

Tried the unpacked version on my 4MB MegaST and it runs but displays a lot of stray pixels / artifacts. :(

Do you need to switch to 8MHz mode?

Looks like the wrong wakeup mode. Just switch off and on the Atari and try again.
