I read all ten pages of the ST blog and found it a very interesting and accurate portrayal of that era. I not a demo coder or anything but I could relate to much of what was written in other ways.

Some background info about Holocaust....

Postby JonB » Tue May 22, 2012 4:52 pm

I'm a little uncomfortable with the name of this (I assume) demo. I suppose it's nothing to do with Nazi war crimes is it?

On my mobile at the moment but will check out the blog n due course.

If you read the blog, you will see that the name was born out of young naivety with no malice etc. You remember how it was being a teen and thinking up cool looking or sounding names for things? I sure did and cringe at some of them now!

Yeah well I can relate to that. I didn't think it was malicious, just ..err.. "not in the best of taste".

Still, I'm a pompous old git at the best of times... ;)

if you read the blog, Zappy addresses the dubious name of the group directly.

So anyway, this is a beautiful piece of writting Zappy!!!!! Great style, it stirred up some repressed demotions (see what i did there?!) inside of me :D

The spirit of a golden era in computer fuckery captured in 10 short blog pages.

the piece where you hit 'the zone' and are letting the code pour out of you (no mistakes, no debugging WTF) for 4 days is just amazing.

Zappy one more thing - i remember you released the source to Blood (it came in very handy for me when I dabbled with fullscreen).. but i dont remember seeing the code for your fullscreen generator you talk of - ie. the code that takes exisiting code and injects it into fullscreen framework.. would be very interesting to see that, i never saw one before.

ok finally, you talk about having only 3 heroes in coding (Manikin/Nic/Bak).. well for what it's worth, you made it to my list ;)

Zappy... can we now expect a comeback on ST?

Sorry, I have no idea where or even if that code survived anywhere. If it was not included in the Blood stuff, then I guess it got lost. I do have a box full of old ST disks... somewhere. Maybe at my parents' place or something. But I can't tell whether that particular piece of code is on one of the disks out there (if they even still work), and I have no time to investigate.

Zappy... can we now expect a comeback on ST?

Let me think about it.... hmm.... Ah: no :)

I really enjoyed reading those retrospectives of the demo coding scene, genuinely intriguing stuff. Does anyone know of some more articles like this? Or maybe retrospectives about game coding too?
