Dragonnels - Unlimited Bobs

Postby Steven Seagal » Sun Nov 20, 2011 11:13 am

I have a question about this fine demo. I notice a glitch in Steem, in Hatari too, I believe, in the menu.
In the overscan zone, the mouse pointer disappears.
In Steem, it's because of the keyboard routines (that make V8 Music Studio work). With original timings, there's no glitch.
Also, when you click on arrows, more than one digit change.
The usual question is: "How does it behave on a ST?"

Hello

There's no bottom overscan in this screen ; where do you see this ?
The timings used in Hatari were not measured on a real ST, they're larger than what they should be, which creates this flickering effect (because the mouse pointer is copied to the screen at the same time / HBL it's displayed by the shifter).

So, if you use Hatari's timing for Steem's ikbd, you will get the same result.

Yes, I was going to edit my post, this isn't even in the overscan zone (I thought it could be a reason).
I try to take the 7200 cycles delay value in Steem, as in Hatari.

Hello

fixing this is rather easy, for example using 8000 cycles instead of 7200 would certainly do the trick. But if that's what you did, the questions are : will it work in all cases now, and could it create regression ?
I'm afraid it could be the case, that's why unless I find time to really measure various ikbd commands on STF, I prefer leaving it this way under Hatari, changing a value based on a single demo doesn't seem a long term solution to me (in my experience, it often created problems elsewhere).
So, I prefer a demo that is known not to work, than trying to fix it by changing values that were not really measured, else in the end, the source code for Hatari will become a giant piece of workarounds and empirical constants with no real meaning.

But of course, you're free to modify Steem the way you want ;)

Not at all. I hacked it a more specific way. But now I disable the hack and it's still fixed: that's what I call programming!
Maybe you knew it, but this demo uses the "absolute mouse mode".
