I remember seeing this demo and being really impressed - was determined to code my own. A friend of mine was already on the case and managed it before me - but I think my attempt was more precise. ;-) aah - competitive days...

Affine mapping like this looks really crap for anything near the camera. If you are drawing a fine mesh (8mhz - hah!) you can draw 90%+ of the mesh this way but there are horrible perspective artifacts on the few that get up close. On an ST, most objects showed some wobbly artifacts.

The 'fix' was to use a near-isometric projection, damping the perspective just enough - but keeping the object big.

The other, similar thing that impressed me was the dithered gouraud cube on the floppy loader for 'Interphase' (the game). I even remember extracting the binary to have a look too :)

How do you do fast texture mapping without using a c2p routine? I don't think anyone used that back in the day and I have seen some very fast texture mappers and also other routines, roto zoomers and such stuff that need to be plot pixel by pixel and isn't so bitplane friendly.

Sorry, think I went to check out the routine in GFA and find out whether it was asm inline... I think whatever code there was I was able to edit and play around with .. I will get an opportunity to dig it out soon!

@Zamuel_a - you have to do the c2p 'as you go', which is a bit painful (addx/carry->planes, along with the dx/dy stuff), . but if the shape is not enormous there's less c2p action overall and you have a trade... I think some of the early mappers were not the full 4 planes too...
