We need an Atari Demo Site!

Postby Marcer » Mon Feb 23, 2009 5:49 pm

While sorting my demos. i get confused here and there. etc.. and thought for myself

it would be very much easier to have an a la Atari Legend style of Demo site for Atari platform!
this way we could in the end have one good place to collection and share information of demos/intros.

Not to forget have final-betas and proper versions only. and updates (patched).

But I guess this is just one another dream of mine :P

Pouet is good but not enough information about prods is stored.

ADA is better when you just want to check Amiga stuff. More information about the demos and some nice democoding talk on the forums too. Pouet is too big. I'm sure Atari scene would benefit from something like ADA.

also pouet is requested links to every prod (no own space). this means time to time broken download links :(

not much of proper. pouet is more like an all-platform light collection place. where ppl like to thumb up on each others prods. very enjoyble. but not good as a find a demo place or gather infos..

I'm willing to skin the site if it become a reality...if you get a name for it..let me know..and I cook up a logo for it..since I totally loved the demo scene on the ST..would love to contribute to it's preservation

ADA is better when you just want to check Amiga stuff.

Rephrase: ADA is better when you want to check one of the <700 demos in it's database. In all other cases, it's much less useful (to put it mildly ;))

As for the forum attached, forums are nice but they're a bonus, not the core business of archive sites imho. Actually, the Pouët BBS is not very useful at all, except for posting fixes (something Marcer never ever does...)
also pouet is requested links to every prod (no own space).

Marcer... We've had this discussion before, it's sad to see you repeat the same non-arguments again. Like it says at the bottom of every single prod page on Pouet, "hosted on scene.org"... 14 mirrors worldwide isn't enough for you or what?! And before you come up with the same reply again, no, we don't force people to use scene.org hosting- it's a free world, after all.
but not good as a find a demo place or gather infos..

Oh? Then please point me to one single place that's better for such purposes, just one will do...
http://demozoo.org/

Demozoo was a cool concept (taking main data from Pouët, and adding more in it's own database), but hardly anyone seems to support it anymore... Too bad really.

Flaffle seems to be very nice, I like this "old BBS" theme.

Well i really can understand Marcer's point... demozoo has some bonusfeatures and some time ago I start to add stuff like credits there...
but I would prefer something like "pouet v2.0" which was planned already... that would save us a lot of work... and I put really a lot of work
into pouet and building up a completely new site would mean HUGE work... and esp. you Marcer should know that :)

I can only speak for myself and I don't have the time nor motivation to support another site...

...flaffle looks nice indeed... I like the bombs lol :)

The biggest problem that I see is... there is no unity in the scene.... well Atari Legend "HAS" the database for it already and Brume always
wanted to implement that for years and nothing happened... also so many people doing "their own" website (won't drop any names here)
instead of teaming up and doing something big. There are atleast 3-4 atari game databases that are neither complete nor competitive
to Hall of Light or Lemon for amiga stuff.

I know there is alot of work.. But I hoped some lights would open up here. mainly my pointing stick for AL site. since I know there is already an DB section for it, aswell for falcon stuff.. but they are not made visible yet...
which is crap. if those section could open.. then it would be more than good.

But it seems to be a big trouble to run AL as a site. :/

We'd need a lot more volunteers on the DB side of things Marcer for both the Demos & Falcon sections to be opened up. Not that I'm trying to put you off (as per my other comment in another thread).
My main site: http://www.mug-uk.co.uk - slowly digging up the bits from my past (and re-working a few): Atari ST, Sega 8-bit (game hacks) and NDS (Music ripping guide).

I develop a free Word (for Windows) add-in that's available for Word 2007 upwards. It's a fix-it toolbox that will allow power Word users to fix document errors. You can find it at: http://www.mikestoolbox.co.uk

At first I really liked the idea of Atari Legend becoming THE ULTIMATE atari resource... but after so many years it did not turn out to work... I wonder where's the problem?

    . Lack of volunteers
. Boredom with Atari world / scene / people
. Real life forcing a change in direction
. Too much sniping from others outside of AL
    . And many other reasons

Above are some of the real and possible reasons why various people (who are still within AL but don't do much at present - or anything at all) have sailed on. They pop by occasionally but don't hang around. Hence why when we went into hibernation we did post up the news article stating that people were doing other stuff and there was only going to be a few of us keeping the ship going :)

I hang on in there mainly because I'd like to make it the best resource out there and allow it to link to Atarimania / Guardians of the Past (i.e. like we do with Lemon Amiga) but my PHP coding skills are non-existant so I stick to filling in the gaps in the database / scanning covers etc. Now that AL is back, I can continue where I left off once I blow the dust off the scanners :)

We need *reliable* DB admin people - e.g. people to take screenshots and upload them, find out the credits of the demos / Falcon games etc.

We need PHP coders who are reliable. Dal_1978 fixed a shit-load of small annoying bugs but he's got more important real-life things going on so he's not been back in ages. Still see him on FB so I know he's alive :)

Same with Bullis - he was doing a load of DB admin work but he's not been seen on here in ages either.

Lotek : I'm sure the work on Atari Legend could be resumed for the demoscene part.

On the other hand, there is another project being worked on but I can't talk about it yet ;)
