Re: Caprtive codes

I was playing captive on my Atari ST computer, i played about 132 missions (1320maps), then i read in a paper that the game contains 66000 maps (Random made, whithin the game) so i figured it was meaningless to play any further :) Sorry, but I'd have to see it to believe it :) You see, it takes abo...

To move around with the keyboard in Captive, you need to use the numeric keypad. With Steem, I've mapped my 'Q', 'W', 'E', 'A', 'S' and 'D' keys to move around. Click the lightning icon ("Shortcut") in the toolbar. As for saving a game, you don't use the "Save game" option of a g...

Here are the TOS and Captive ROMs.
http://pages.infinit.net/lyverbe/Steem-Captive.zip

I included both TOS 1.02 and 2.06. I use 2.06 for Captive, but I believe TOS 1.02 should work fine too.

Does anyone know why Trill gets called "The creator of evil" at the end of a mission? Good question. I just asked Antony Crowther (Captive programmer) and he replied this: "The creator of evil" Can't remember where that came from, I think the original design you were a bad guy. ...

I have a hard time believing that. *Planet* hundred and something, okay... but *mission* hundred and something, doubtful.

If you enjoyed playing Captive so much 15 years ago, why wouldn't you find it exciting again now? I'm at mission 18 and I don't find it any different than around mission 12-13. There's a moment when the game has reached its maximum level of gameplay and, at that point, it can't get any better. No ne...

Writing a plugin for Steem

I'm trying to write a plugins for Steem. Although the author of Steem has told me how to start, it doesn't work quite well and he's a busy dude who obviously has more important priorities in life :) On my computer, the plugin crash somewhere after the Init() function is called. I've sent my DLL to t...

Thanks for the icon, but won't be much use to me. I tried to write a plugin for Steem Debug and the application crash when loading. I sent the code to the Steem author who said he'd take a look at it, but I never got a reply.

New Captive Site

A couple of months ago, I launched Steem and started a game of Captive to bring back good old memories. To my surprise, I still got hooked on it, enough to take my ST out of the box to transfer my original saved games. I've always wanted to learn on how to make a webpage but didn't know on which sub...

The floppy disc has to be in a very special format to be compatible between the PC and the ST. If I remember correctly, I believe it's 2 sides, 79 tracks, 10 sectors per tracks. It also must not be a HDD (High Density Disk) floppy. I remember getting this info from the PASTI package. Once I followed...

Oh, I have to complete all the levels? I was skipping some by dumping extra probes  I'm not too sure I want to do that.

I converted my old saved games by using Pasti. See http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=8695

Captive - Bouncing off the space station

15 years ago, I played months and months of Captive. I've recently transfered my original saved games to Steem and continued playing where I was: In the space station of mission 15, right in front of Trill. I'm now at the space station of mission 16, but I can't seem to be able to land on it. My lan...

Memory access

So Captive is impossible to finish... unless you cheat! I'd like to do some reverse engineering on the game to be able to see how it ends. Unfortunately, it's a pain to do because I believe I would need to save memory snapshots and understand them for each little things I'd do to the game. What woul...

Not that I really care. I save memory snapshots with Steem, so a real "Save game" is useless.

Use the PASTI imaging tool to create an image of this "Protected" save disk, if it works then you will be able to use this image with STEEM. YES! It works! Thanks for the suggestion! I can now continue my 15 year old game. I'll have to change my way of playing though. I'm now used to map ...

Converting my Captive saved game disk

No current converter will work because track 0 is screwed. I believe this is intentional for prevent little people like me to mess around with it :) So, I'm writing down my own converter in C++. I'm able to skip track 0 and jump directly to track 1 where the data begins. Unfortunately, I have a prob...

Dungeon Master, which I bought simultaneously with my 1040st. In fact, you buy a game for your computer, but in my case, I bought a computer for the game! Dungeon Master made me leave the 8bit scene.

Yeah, it rings a bell too, but it's been so long.

Unfortunate. I thought I had found something that indicates that there is an ending to Captive. You guys think there could be a way we could contact Crowther and get an official answer to this question?

Captive - The End?

Most of you know that Captive is a game that "never" ends. I have played 160 maps back when the game came out and got tired of it. Yes, there is apparently an end, but it's almost impossible to reach it because it would take decades. With 336,000 maps, it requires a patience no human has. ...
